POSITION OVERVIEW

This Lead Engineering Specialist, Electrical role supports technical activities within LNG Operations departments including Engineering Services, Reliability, Maintenance, and Production.  The role is accountable for providing technical expertise, troubleshooting support, maintaining, improving electrical systems, updating associated documentation, and knowledge transfer to peers in the specific area of expertise.  It is expected that this role will be primarily guided on day-day work activity by engineering resources in the Engineering Services and Reliability departments.

This is a non-DOT position.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Provide Subject Matter Expertise and support for all conditions of the VFD system operating modes including start-ups, breakdowns, continuous operation, and maintenance windows. The below specific duties are required for the VFD system which includes equipment such as Variable Frequency Drive, VFD controls, cooling system, excitation, synchronizing unit, synchronous motor, transformers, VFD applicable switchgear and switchgear controls:
    • Work with electrical engineering resources to support maintenance activities, projects, and preparing work scopes.
    • Work with maintenance and operator technicians to provide technical capability and direction during troubleshooting and maintenance of equipment.
    • Assist in field coordination and work direction of contract activities.
    • Work with Reliability engineering to provide review of Maintenance Job Plans and develop necessary optimized improvement recommendations to meet operating criteria. Support resources in the execution and auditing/assessment of the maintenance strategies. 
    • Develops scopes of work and prepares bills of material to support maintenance activities and contract efforts.
    • Performs equipment analysis and routine condition monitoring tasks in support of maintenance strategies.
    • Lead equipment failure investigations, review applicable failure analysis reports and recommendations.
    • Review vendor documentation for accuracy and ensure discrepancies are managed through document control processes.
    • Manage vendor documentation for maintenance, operation, and troubleshooting proficiency.
    • Support engineering changes within the Management of Change (MOC) Process.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS 

 

Knowledge:

 

Demonstrated expertise in understanding of industrial electrical systems including switchgear, transformers, distribution equipment, critical AC and DC power systems, breaker control schemes, relay protection schemes, motors, low voltage drives and soft starters, and standby power systems.  Advanced knowledge of medium voltage, large power Variable Frequency Drives, Variable Frequency Drive control systems, synchronous motors, and synchronous motor excitation systems.  Knowledge of site work processes and procedures will be developed.

  • Exceptional leadership and administrative abilities are required. 

  • An acute sensitivity to safety issues in a hazardous environment. 

  • Effective communicator at all levels of an organization and with individuals and groups from different disciplines, industries and governmental agencies. 

  • Exceptional written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills. 

  • Organized and able to manage multiple projects.     

  • Computer savvy including Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint. 

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE 

  • Education and Certifications: Associate degree or higher in applicable electrical technology or bachelor’s in electrical engineering or equivalent discipline, or a combination of applicable certifications and experience will be considered in lieu of degree. 

  • Experience: At least eight (8 ) years’ experience as an electrical specialist or technician in the petrochemical, power or similar production industry with an applicable degree or ten (10) years without a degree. Proven VFD experience is required.

This position requires minimal supervision and must able to use sound judgement and decision making.  

 

WORK CONDITIONS 

  • Job is performed in an industrial plant setting. 

  • Occasionally, work may be performed from home, after normal work hours or on weekends.

  • Limited travel required, as business conditions dictate.

  • Subject to drug and alcohol testing, per applicable federal regulations or as required by Cheniere.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is often required to stand, walk, sit, climb stairs, work at height above ground on stairs and catwalks, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, talk or hear, smell, type and write.  

  • Must be able to board a ship via a gangway, climb to the top of a tank (200 steps), scale vertical steel ladder up to forty feet or more in height and lift and move objects weighting up to 50 pounds.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee will work indoors and outdoors and be exposed to year-around weather conditions, ocean environment, and noise. 

  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

  • Required to obtain mandated certification by attending Company-sponsored training in basic first aid, and CPR.

  • Must maintain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) in good standing status.
