Lateral Volunteer Firefighter/EMT

Cheney Fire Department is currently accepting job applications for the position of Lateral Volunteer Firefighter/EMT. Cheney Volunteer Firefighters are made of selfless individuals who seek to better their community and themselves by gaining additional experience and working within a highly dynamic system.

We currently have 18 part-time and 10 full-time firefighters that respond to over 2,000 calls each year. 74% of those calls are for medical services. Our program is a bit unique and rebuilt to accommodate both those part-time members and the full-time members. We have three teams of six (part-time) volunteers who are dedicated to a fixed "shift." Six that work solely on "A-Shift," six that work solely on "B-Shift," and six that work solely on “C-Shift." With that, two part-paid members work one 12-hour shift every nine days alongside the two full-time members. The schedule is roughly 3 days a month that a volunteer works these 12-hour shifts from 7 PM to 7 AM. Approximately every 6-weeks, a shift will fall on Saturday or Sunday. These weekend shifts are expected to be a 24-hour shift starting at 7 AM until the following morning at 7 AM. Weekend shifts are where the majority of the required training takes place and thus help eliminate the need for all the volunteer firefighters to come in every week just for training. We generally ask those who are interested in the program to stop by the station so we can better explain it since this may sound confusing.
