Job Purpose:
Prepare blends; perform material handling tasks; assist other production personnel to perform line change over and maintain plant housekeeping.
Work Environment:
A Blender regularly performs duties in the production area, an industrial environment that requires use of personal protective equipment including safety glasses, hearing protection, hard hat, steel toed shoes, work gloves, protective sleeves and/or clothing, respiratory protection, and other specialized protective equipment all as directed by the Company’s operating procedures, safety procedures, and other instructions provided by management. The production environment includes equipment operating at very high temperatures, often resulting in temperatures inside the production area that are higher than ambient temperatures. The employee will be exposed to moving mechanical parts, sharp equipment components and tools, hot surfaces, hot plastic, hot water, wet or slippery floor conditions, airborne dust and particles, and outdoor weather conditions. The employee will work in high places using fall arrest equipment.
Typical work schedule includes 12 hours per day, alternating 36/48 hours per week (overtime is required according to production demand). Rotating shift work required. Work instructions are provided in written form or spoken, generally in English.
Essential Functions and Requirements:
Blending tasks include but are not limited to: properly selecting, verifying and weighing ingredients, and labeling containers, all according to documented procedures and instructions provided by management; properly documenting and evaluating blending activity according to established procedures and other instructions provided by management; communicating any deficiencies to management; assisting management with problem resolution related to blending and documenting any resulting actions; maintaining housekeeping of the blend rooms; and performing other tasks directed by management.
Material handling tasks include but are not limited to: frequently using a forklift, pallet jack or similar device to transport material and other items; using pneumatic transfer equipment, piping and hoses to transport materials from/to silos and railcars according to documented procedures and other instructions provided by management; regularly verifying and maintaining proper connections of transfer piping and hoses according to criteria provided by management; sampling and/or visually inspecting materials stored in packages, railcars and silos as directed by management; manually transferring material using a bucket or similar device; assembling, moving, filling packages (including boxes, bags, and sacks) disassembling and discarding containers and packages used in the production process.
Shift and line changeover, housekeeping and other general tasks include but are not limited to: disassembling, cleaning, inspecting, and reassembling equipment according to documented procedures and other instructions provided by management; repackaging, sealing and labeling of ingredient containers as needed; general organization and cleanup of work areas.
The following physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential job functions listed above. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; use hands & fingers to handle and feel objects, tools, and controls; reach repetitively with arms & hands; talk; and hear. The employee is required to walk, sit, climb, balance, kneel, crouch, crawl and stoop. The employee will frequently lift items up to 55 pounds from floor level to above shoulder height and use devices that require a pushing or pulling force up to 120 pounds. The employee is required to use combined lifting and twisting abilities to assemble, use, move and disassemble containers and packages. The employee will climb ladders and perform tasks at heights greater than 6 feet and stand on concrete floor or platform regularly throughout a 12 hour shift. Specific vision abilities required in this job include color perception, close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and the ability to adjust focus.
Employee must also have a satisfactory attendance record and be responsible for the safe operation of all equipment and materials.
Additional Responsibilities:
Maintain awareness of and perform tasks in compliance with all internal policies, procedures and practices, as described in the Employee Handbook, all Safety and Environmental Manuals, all Quality System Procedures, and other instructions provided by management, as well as applicable OSHA and Environmental regulations.
Identify, troubleshoot and report the following to management: equipment defects or malfunctions; out of spec material or contamination; safety/environmental issues or incidents.
Initiating actions up to and including equipment shutdown, to mitigate a safety, environmental, and/or product quality incident.
Effective verbal communication with co-workers and management is required. Certain reports and other communication will be required in writing, generally in English.
In order to fulfill the role, the employee will receive training and must demonstrate proficiency for a wide range of job related tasks (see list of job related tasks above). To ensure safe and reliable performance, the employee shall not operate any equipment or perform any job related tasks unless they have been deemed to be qualified to do so by a member of Chemtrusion Management. The employee should always consult with their Supervisor if there is any question regarding the employee’s qualification status, prior to performing any job related tasks.
Pre-Qualifications:
High School diploma or GED equivalent; produce acceptable scores on the following ACT
WorkKeys tests: Applied Mathematics, Graphic Literacy and Workplace Documents . Preferred candidates should have prior work history in a manufacturing environment and have strong mechanical aptitude.
