Job Summary

Job Summary: Performs all tests commonly performed in a hospital laboratory. Maintains, operates, and troubleshoots equipment. Job incumbent will perform quality control measures. Incumbent rotates on-call and weekend coverage. Will respond in case of internal or external disasters.

Representative Duties: Under the direct supervision of the Laboratory Director, job incumbent:

• Performs a full range of clinical laboratory tests and examinations in all sections of the laboratory (chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, specimen dispatch).
• Follows established laboratory procedures for specimen handling, processing, test analysis, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results.
• Performs scheduled and unscheduled maintenance on all instruments. Implements and monitors daily quality control, and advises on a course of action when values are out of range. Documents all corrective action. Notifies lead technologist of problems and actions taken.
• Collects blood specimens from patients. Evaluates specimens received for testing to determine suitability for testing. Notifies physician of rejected specimens.
• Maintains all record keeping systems in compliance with established procedures. Enters and verifies results using the laboratory information system.
• Assists, as instructed, in orientation of new employees, and other medical personnel. Participates in quality improvement process/projects, both in the lab, the Health Center, and the rural villages.
• Shares after hours "On-call" and weekend coverage on a rotational basis. Responds in case of an internal or external disaster.
• Assists the lead technologist in administrative duties when asked and is acting lab supervisor in his/her absence.
• Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of the developmental stages of patients throughout the continuum of life as they relate to the collection of specimens and the interpretation of results.
• Responsible to assess the knowledge and skills of department staff in the areas of principles of growth and developmental stages of patients throughout the continuum of life as they relate to the collection of specimens and the interpretation of results.
• Builds effective, supportive relationships with co-workers and internal/external customers. Uses positive interpersonal skills to promote success of team members and promote laboratory and health center goals.
• Supports moderate complexity and point-of-care testing in sub regional clinics and villages as needed.
• Maintain accurate patient records; maintain patient confidentiality.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

• Completion of a Bachelor's degree in Chemical, Physical, Biological or Clinical Laboratory Science from an accredited institution.
• MLS (ASPC) certification or the equivalent. Non-certified new graduates are eligible for hire, although candidates must obtain certification as an MLS within one of year of graduation to retain position. Able to pass the core competencies annually.
• Must pass background check pursuant to federal Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act requirements and State of Alaska background check.

• Knowledge and understanding of universal precautions and infection control practices. Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations regarding health care.
• Ability to prepare clear and concise reports.
• Ability to work independently in the absence of supervision.
• Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
• Comprehensive knowledge of professional medical technology/clinical laboratory science principles, practices, concepts, and theories providing for sound independent work.
• Comprehensive knowledge of laboratory quality control and assurance procedures and principles of performance improvement providing for sound independent work.
• Knowledge of laboratory equipment and ability to maintain, troubleshoot, and repair instrumentation.
• Ability to use independent technical judgment to analyze and interpret laboratory results.
  
  

Supervision: This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Supervision

Physical demands: Able to spend long periods of time sitting or standing. Have good color discernment. May be exposed to communicable diseases, blood borne pathogens, and hazardous materials. May need to lift up to 40 pounds occasionally. Traveling from site to site (includes travel in small aircraft), standing, and stooping for extended periods of time. Exposure to a variety of working environments, including rural village communities.

Summation

Summation: This position including daily interaction with patients and health services staff. Incumbent is obligated to follow Health Center, TCC and principles to ensure safety of patients and staff. Must be able to work in a team or independently. Job incumbent must promote a courteous, professional and efficient public image to patients and referral providers/entities.
