Job Summary:
The Blueberry Pruner is responsible for performing seasonal pruning of blueberry plants to support healthy growth, improve fruit production, and maintain the long-term viability of the fields. This role ensures pruning is completed safely, efficiently, and according to farm standards and best practices.
Job Duties & Responsibilities:
- Perform hand-pruning of blueberry bushes using shears, loppers, or other hand tools.
- Identify and remove weak, dead, damaged, or diseased canes.
- Shape plants for optimal light penetration and future growth.
- Follow pruning guidelines provided by the Farm Manager.
- Maintain a clean, organized work area in the field.
- Safely operate and maintain pruning tools.
- Report any plant health concerns or irrigation issues observed in the field.
- Work in varying weather conditions and on uneven terrain.
- Meet daily productivity and quality expectations.
- Follow all safety procedures and wear required PPE.
Supervision:
- Supervision Received: Performs work independently under general supervision from the Farm Manager and/or Harvest Lead. Must be self-motivated with ability to work without direct supervision.
- Supervisory Responsibilities: None
Minimum Qualifications:
- Experience with pruning (blueberries, orchards, vineyards, landscaping, or similar) is required.
- Ability to work outdoors for long periods in different weather conditions.
- Ability to walk, bend, stoop, kneel, and stand for extended periods.
- Must be able to lift up to 25–30 lbs.
- Strong attention to detail and willingness to follow instructions.
- Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently or as part of a small team
Skills & Abilities:
- Work in different weather conditions with exposure to the elements.
- Knowledge of operation of motorized equipment such as trimmers and shears.
- Learn irrigation techniques using sprinklers, hoses and flooding methods.
- Bend or stoop repeatedly over time.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
- Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed oral instructions.
- Interpersonal Relations: Work effectively with other employees and has good verbal communication skills.
- Physical Demands: Frequent standing and walking. May be required to periodically lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
- Work Environment: The employee is expected to work with a "WE" attitude and a commitment to team participation.
