Summary
A Driver Manager is a key leadership position that oversees the day-to-day execution of his/her assigned driver fleet(s). A Driver Manager is accountable for the performance of their drivers in the areas of safety, service, utilization, and retention. Anticipates situations in advance and prepares to cope with them, integrates changes and meets expected goals. This position requires a strong sense of urgency.
Responsibilities
- Supervise and support a team of drivers engaged in route driving, shuttle driving, bus driving, heavy haul, and other commercial vehicle operations.
- Coordinate daily schedules, routes, and load & unload activities to maximize efficiency and meet delivery or service deadlines
- Manages driver performance by setting expectations, conducting regular reviews, and implementing corrective action processes up to and including termination when needed.
- Responsible for problem resolution with assigned drivers and accountable for driver retention.
- Ensure all drivers are compliant with FMCSA regulations such as: hours of service, random drug testing, and proper licensing.
- Train and mentor drivers to ensure success in areas such as proper use of tools and systems, including, for example, mobile COMM, document scanning, and payroll processes.
- Tracks and manages assigned drivers’ home time, schedules, including planned time off, holiday pay compliance, and vacations.
- Resolves driver payroll discrepancies, including authorizing additional accessorial and hourly pay when appropriate.
- Communicates any other operational requirements that pertain to the company’s needs, such as moving trailers, covering freight needs with accurate data entered into the system.
- Notifies customer service of any detention in a timely manner.
- Manages driver utilization to ensure their drivers achieve targeted utilization levels; works with load planners to improve driver productivity.
- Manages tractors assigned to their drivers to include equipment utilization, timely completion of preventative maintenance, cleanliness of their trucks, etc.
- Enforces understanding and compliance with all company policies and procedures, including becoming familiarized with the Cheema Driver Manual.
- Monitors deliveries and pickups for service failures to proactively alert Planning and/or Customer Service of any loads in jeopardy of being late.
- Enters, updates, and investigates driver related service failures.
- Works until driver issues are resolved for the day and/or a proper hand off has been made.
- Produces clear and concise transition notes for afterhours staff.
- Helps answer all operations calls from drivers during shift hours.
- Responds to voicemail, mobile COMM messages, and emails quickly and efficiently.
- Ensures accurate data entry into system, including pickup/delivery times, extra driver pay, routing/delivery information, etc.
- Maintains positive relationship with all other employees, as well as drivers.
- Other duties assigned by management.
Requirements
- Proven experience in commercial driving roles such as freight delivery, school bus driving, paratransit services, or heavy equipment operation
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate and manage a diverse driver team
- Knowledge of transportation safety standards and regulatory compliance (e.g., DOT regulations)
- Mechanical knowledge related to vehicle maintenance and troubleshooting (e.g., forklift operation or heavy haul equipment)
- Excellent communication skills for effective coordination with drivers, dispatchers, clients, and safety personnel
- Ability to handle administrative tasks such as record keeping for licenses, certifications (manual transmission experience preferred), and incident reports
- Flexibility to adapt to changing schedules or route adjustments in a fast-paced environment
Education/Experience Requirements
Education: HS Diploma/GED
AND
Years of Experience: 1-2 years preferred
