Job Overview
The Lineman is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of underground and aerial voice and data communication cables supporting Chazy & Westport Telephone Company’s telecommunications network. This position plays a critical role in ensuring reliable service delivery to residential and business customers across rural service territories.
The ideal candidate is safety-focused, mechanically inclined, and comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions. Experience in telecommunications, utilities, or related trades is preferred, but training will be provided for the right candidate.
Duties
Installation & Construction
- Install, maintain, and repair aerial and underground copper and fiber communication cables
- Perform pole climbing, ladder work, and work from bucket trucks when required
- Assist with trenching, conduit installation, hand-holes, pedestals, and vaults
- Install terminals, closures, drops, and related plant hardware
- Place and secure cable in accordance with engineering prints and safety standards
Maintenance & Troubleshooting
- Diagnose and repair service outages and network issues
- Perform routine inspections of outside plant facilities
- Locate and repair cable faults using test equipment
- Respond to service disruptions caused by weather, accidents, or aging infrastructure
Safety & Compliance
- Follow all OSHA, DOT, and company safety policies
- Utilize proper personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Participate in safety training and tailboard meetings
- Maintain safe work zones, traffic control, and proper signage
- Comply with CPNI, company security, and confidentiality standards
Collaboration & Documentation
- Work closely with Outside Plant Engineers, technicians, and contractors
- Accurately document work performed, materials used, and service tickets
- Maintain accurate plant records and field notes
- Communicate effectively with supervisors and customers as needed

Experience
- Prior experience as a utility lineman or in industrial or commercial electrician roles is highly desirable
- Hands-on experience with bucket operation, climbing techniques, and working at heights
- Knowledge of NEC standards for electrical installations and safety procedures
- Experience with welding, cabling, blueprint reading, and troubleshooting electrical systems
- Familiarity with field service operations involving utility locating, tree trimming around power lines, or construction site work
- Proficiency with tools such as ohmmeters and other diagnostic equipment for electrical testing
- Ability to operate bucket trucks and other specialized equipment safely in various environments
This position requires a commitment to safety, technical expertise in electrical systems, and the physical ability to perform demanding fieldwork. Candidates should demonstrate a strong understanding of high voltage systems, construction practices, and safety standards essential for reliable power distribution.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED
- Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record
- Ability to perform physical labor including lifting up to 75 lbs
- Comfortable working at heights and in confined spaces
- Willingness to work outdoors year-round in varying weather conditions
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Basic mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience as a lineman, telecom technician, utility worker, or cable installer
- Experience with fiber and copper cable installation
- Pole climbing or bucket truck experience
- Knowledge of underground utility construction practices
- Familiarity with rural telecommunications systems
- CDL or ability to obtain one (preferred but not required)
Work Schedule & Conditions
- Full-time position
- On-call or emergency response duties may be required
- Occasional overtime during outages or emergency repairs
- Local travel within the service territory

Pay: $22.00 - $32.00 per hour
