Position Summary

The Academic Advisor guides students in developing and clarifying academic and career goals including academic planning, career planning, degree completion, academic student support, and engagement with the college experience. The Advisor provides proactive consultation, coaching, performs interventions, and works collaboratively with faculty, staff, campus, and community partners to promote and support student success. In addition, the Advisor is knowledgeable and works with internal and external partners to assist students with transfers, as needed. This position interprets information, guidelines, and procedures, as established by policy and regulations.

Essential Functions

Holistic Student Support

Advisors focus on developing human potential through the lens of social justice. Advisors look at the whole person, because the journey requires students to manage career decisions, program choice, course selection, admission requirements, and financial matters as well as, their personal lives can influence their academic success. Holistic advising is to understand and focus on the student as a whole person: where an individual is in their development; what they are currently experiencing in their lives; and what their goals and aspirations are.

  • Discover: Discover students' interests, strengths, and passions. Listen carefully to each answer to questions is key to success in this phase.
  • Dream: Assist students in articulating a vision of what they might become, and then help them to develop their life and career goals.
  • Design: Work with students to co-create concrete goals, and teach students how to make decisions to achieve these goals.
  • Deliver: Motivate, encourage and energize students as they follow through with their plans.
  • Deeper Reflection: Support and challenge students to raise the bar as they continue to move forward.

Fiscal Stewardship

Assist the director with the responsible fiscal stewardship of the funds allocated to the Center for Academic Advising.

  • Ensure college resources are used as intended for legitimate college purpose.
  • Stewardship for spending resources to include time, money, people, and property.
  • Research grant opportunities, submit proposals for approval, assist in the maintenance of required program records, and ensure that funds are utilized as planned.

Knowledge, Skills And Work Characteristics

  • Understand and effectively communicate the curriculum requirements.
  • Understand and effectively communicate college policies and procedures.
  • Encourage and guide students as they develop realistic goals while they work on gaining the skills to achieve those goals.
  • Provide students with information about and strategies for utilizing the resources and services both on campus and in the community.
  • Assist students in understanding the purposes and goals of higher education and its effects on their lives and personal goals.
  • Monitor and accurately document students’ progress toward meeting their goals.
  • Reply to communications from students in a timely manner (24-48 hours).
  • Be accessible for meeting with advisees via phone, email, virtually, and by appointment.
  • Be prepared for each appointment.
  • Assist students in gaining decision-making skills.
  • Assist students in gaining self-advocacy skills.
  • Assist students in assuming responsibility for their educational plans and achievements.
  • Maintain appropriate confidentiality of student information.
  • Assist students in working closely with their instructors.
  • Model integrity with each student interaction.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • 2 years of advising experience
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, especially with students
  • Expert knowledge of skills and education necessary for various professions

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in higher education, student personnel, or counseling with five years of experience in educational planning, academic advising, and/or freshman-year programming.
  • Experience using technology in the advising profession.

Salary Range: $40,142 - $50,178
