Position Summary

The Academic Advisor – Nursing and Allied Health Student Success reports to the Director of the Center for Academic Advising and provides proactive advising, coaching, and case management to students pursuing limited enrollment programs within the Nursing and Allied Health Division. The primary purpose of this position is to re-engage students who are not admitted into competitive programs, help them identify alternative academic and career pathways, and support their continued enrollment and completion at Chattanooga State Community College.

The Advisor conducts intentional outreach to applicants who are not selected for admission, as well as students who have stopped attending after receiving a non-admission decision. Through individualized coaching, academic planning, and career exploration, the Advisor promotes student persistence and successful degree completion that leads to a living wage.

The Advisor interprets institutional policies, program admission requirements, and academic regulations while providing accurate information and referrals. This position works collaboratively with the Nursing and Allied Health Division, Admissions, Financial Aid, Career Services, and student support offices to remove barriers and increase student success.

As a grant-funded position, the Advisor also participates in the collection and reporting of student success data to evaluate the effectiveness of outreach and re-engagement efforts and support institutional improvement.

Essential Functions

Nursing and Allied Health Student Success and Re-engagement:

  • Conduct proactive outreach to applicants who are not admitted into Nursing and Allied Health limited enrollment programs.
  • Provide individualized advising, coaching, and case management to help students remain enrolled and identify alternative academic and career pathways.
  • Develop individualized student success plans that promote persistence, academic achievement, and degree completion.
  • Assist students in understanding program admission requirements and strategies for strengthening future applications.
  • Coordinate referrals to academic support services, financial aid, career services, disability services, counseling, and other campus resources to address barriers to student success.
  • Maintain accurate case notes, advising records, and student communications in the College's student information and Customer Relation Management (CRM) systems.
  • Contribute to the monitoring of student persistence, reenrollment, and completion outcomes and participate in grant assessment, data collection, and reporting activities.
  • Collaborate with the Nursing and Allied Health Division, Admissions, Financial Aid, Career Services, and other campus partners to improve student retention and successful pathway completion.

Holistic Student Support

Advisors focus on developing student potential through a holistic, student-centered approach. Advisors recognize that students are managing career decisions, program choice, course selection, admission requirements, and financial considerations, while personal circumstances may also influence their academic progress. Holistic advising considers the student as a whole person, including where they are in their educational journey, what they are currently experiencing, and their goals and aspirations. This approach allows advisors to provide individualized guidance, connect students with appropriate resources, and help them make informed decisions that support their academic and career goals.

  • Discover: Discover students' interests, strengths, and passions. Listen carefully to each answer to questions is key to success in this phase.
  • Dream: Assist students in articulating a vision of what they might become, and then help them to develop their life and career goals.
  • Design: Work with students to co-create concrete goals, and teach students how to make decisions to achieve these goals.
  • Deliver: Motivate, encourage and energize students as they follow through with their plans.
  • Deeper Reflection: Support and challenge students to raise the bar as they continue to move forward.
