Description

At Chattanooga College MDTC, Advisors will help implement our strategy of “Where a small school can make a BIG difference!!”

The Academic Advisor will provide academic advising and support to new and current online & hybrid students to support acclimation to academic life, retention, and degree completion. This includes responsibilities such as course registration, assessing transfer credits, monitoring progress, and overcoming challenges and obstacles. Ideal candidates must have excellent interpersonal, communication, problem-solving, and listening skills. Candidates must be able to adapt to a fast-paced work environment and manage multiple priorities and changing assignments.

This is a professional non-instructional position supporting the academic advising department. This role requires considerable interaction with students through individual meetings, group sessions, and/or events. Academic Advisors are expected to possess extensive knowledge of academic programs, policies, procedures, and student support services. They must be able to interpret individual needs, provide personalized support, and work effectively with individuals who may be confused, stressed, or demanding.

Employees in this role can expect to advise individuals regarding academic plans, progress, and other educational goals, assist with decision-making related to personal educational paths leading to graduation, and help guide individuals toward successful outcomes. This position requires maintaining confidentiality and accurate records to ensure compliance with accreditation standards, institutional policies, and federal regulations (FERPA). The role may also support institutional events such as Orientation and Graduation. A strong commitment to equity, access, and success for underrepresented or at-risk populations is essential.

Salary Range

$37,500 – $43,000

Responsibilities

  • Provides academic advising and support to a diverse population of students, including regular contact regarding performance and daily supervision.
  • Implements institutional or departmental strategic priorities related to advising, retention, and degree completion.
  • Counsels, advises, or supports individuals through individual and group sessions to address concerns and provide guidance.
  • Educates individuals on institutional resources, policies, procedures, and expectations.
  • Implements solutions, including technology, to promote efficiency, access, and success.
  • Completes required professional development and training annually.
  • Supports department-wide and student services initiatives.
  • Maintains accurate documentation and records in compliance with institutional, accreditation, and federal requirements.
  • Collaborates with departments and colleagues to increase engagement, retention, and success, especially for at-risk populations.
  • Provides appropriate referrals for personal, social, and/or academic concerns that may impair success.
  • Upholds confidentiality and complies with institutional policies, accreditation standards, and federal regulations.
  • Assists with planning and coordination of events such as Orientation and Graduation.
  • Maintains tools, systems, or resources (such as advising tools and student information systems) necessary to effectively perform job duties.
  • Remains current on relevant state and federal guidelines, emerging best practices, and research related to the role.
  • Collaborates with the Director of Academic Advising.

Skills

  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally in verbal and written formats.
  • Knowledge of the advisor’s role in supporting learning, access, and success.
  • Ability to use technology to support services, including Microsoft Office, student information systems, and student learning platforms.

Education & Experience

Education or Training:

  • Master’s degree in counseling or a related student development field is preferred.

Experience:

  • A minimum of four (4) years of experience in counseling, advising, or a related student development field is required; experience in community college or higher education is preferred.
