Position Title

Adjunct Faculty – Engineering

Description

At Chattanooga College MDTC, the Adjunct Faculty – Engineering will help implement our strategy of “Where a small school can make a BIG difference!!”. The Adjunct Faculty – Engineering will provide high-quality instruction and academic support to engineering students to support student success, retention, and workforce readiness.

This includes responsibilities such as delivering course content, facilitating lab activities, and assessing student learning outcomes. Ideal candidates must have excellent interpersonal, communication, problem-solving, and listening skills. Candidates must be able to adapt to a fast-paced work environment and manage multiple priorities and changing assignments.

This is an instructional position supporting the Engineering Department. This role requires considerable interaction with students and faculty through individual meetings, group sessions, and/or events. Adjunct Faculty are expected to possess extensive knowledge of engineering principles, mathematics, and industry-standard software.

They must be able to interpret individual needs, provide personalized support, and work effectively with individuals who may be confused, stressed, or demanding. Employees in this role can expect to support individuals regarding academic plans, progress, and career goals , assist with decision-making related to educational and institutional processes , and help guide individuals toward successful outcomes. This position requires maintaining confidentiality and accurate records to ensure compliance with accreditation standards, institutional policies, and federal regulations (e.g., FERPA, as applicable).

The role may also support institutional events such as Orientation, Graduation, or engineering competitions. A strong commitment to equity, access, and success for underrepresented or at-risk populations is essential.

Responsibilities

  • Provides instructional support to a diverse population of engineering students, including regular contact regarding progress and performance.
  • Implements institutional or departmental strategic priorities related to student retention and engagement.
  • Counsels, advises, or supports individuals through individual and group sessions to address concerns and provide guidance.
  • Educates individuals on institutional resources, policies, procedures, and expectations.
  • Implements solutions, including technology, to promote efficiency, access, and success.
  • Completes required professional development and training annually.
  • Supports department-wide and student services initiatives.
  • Maintains accurate documentation and records in compliance with institutional, accreditation, and federal requirements.
  • Collaborates with departments and colleagues to increase engagement, retention, and success, especially for at-risk populations.
  • Provides appropriate referrals for personal, social, and/or academic concerns that may impair success.
  • Upholds confidentiality and complies with institutional policies, accreditation standards, and federal regulations.
  • Assists with planning and coordination of events such as workshops or career fairs.
  • Maintains tools, systems, or resources necessary to effectively perform job duties.
  • Remains current on relevant state and federal guidelines, emerging best practices, and research related to the role.
  • Collaborates with the Department Leadership.

  • Ability to use technology to support services, including Microsoft Office, learning management systems (LMS), and engineering software (e.g., AutoCAD, MATLAB, or SolidWorks).

Education & Experience

  • Education or Training:
    • Bachelor’s degree with a Professional Engineer (PE) license required
    • Master’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Civil, Electrical, or related field) preferred
  • Experience:
    • A minimum of four (4) years of experience in the engineering industry; experience in higher education or teaching is preferred.
