What are the responsibilities and job description for the Elementary Music Teacher position at Chatham County Public Schools?

NATURE OF WORK


Under the general supervision of the School Principal, to develop students' understanding, appreciation of the art of music, including listening to a wide range of musical genre, periods and styles.  To identify, promote and develop each student's talents in vocal and instrumental musical expression.


MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE


Required to hold state certification in Music (license code 800) and designated as "highly qualified."
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Develops and administers music education curriculum consistent with school district goals and objectives.
  2. Promotes a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small group instruction, and student learning.
  3. Develops balanced music program and lessons to organize class time so that students have adequate time for preparation, rehearsal, and instruction.
  4. Conducts ongoing assessment of student musical learning and progress, and modifies instructional methods to fit individual student's needs, including students with special needs; conducts individual and small group instruction as needed.
  5. Utilizes repertoire of all types of music literature, as appropriate.
  6. Plans, coordinates rehearsals for, and directs students in musical programs and performances outside the classroom
  7. Continues to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops or professional meetings, or by conducting research.
  8. Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievement and attendance as required by district procedures and applicable laws.
  9. Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students and parents.
  10. Ensures that student conduct conforms to the school's standards and school district policies, and establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to ensure a productive learning atmosphere during practice, rehearsal and performances.
  11. Coordinates with other professional staff members, especially within grade level, and participates in faculty meetings and committees.
  12. Selects and requisitions appropriate music supplies and instrumental equipment, maintains inventory records, and ensures equipment is in good working order.


MINIMUM STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM RESPONSIBILITIES


Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate a variety of equipment including computers, copiers, calculators, etc. Must be physically able to operate a motor vehicle. Must be able to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Light Work usually requires walking or standing to a significant degree.
Data Conception: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural or composite characteristics (whether similar or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things.
Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. Includes giving instructions, assignments or directions to subordinates or assistants.
Language Ability: Requires the ability to read a variety of correspondence, reports, forms, strategic plans, etc. Requires the ability to prepare correspondence, reports, forms, evaluations, budgets, etc., using prescribed formats and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction, and style. Requires the ability to speak before groups of people with poise, voice control and confidence.
Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions;
Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in standard English.
Numerical Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas; to add and subtract; multiply and divide; utilize decimals and percentages; and to apply the principles of algebra, descriptive statistics and statistical inference.
Form/Spatial Aptitude: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape.
Motor Coordination: Requires the ability coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using office equipment.
Manual Dexterity: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items such as office equipment and hand tools. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
Color Discrimination: Does not require the ability to differentiate between colors and shades of color.
Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress and when confronted with emergency situations.
Physical Communication: Requires the ability to talk and hear: (Talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words. Hearing: perceiving nature of sounds by ear.) Must be able to communicate via telephone.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  1. Masterful knowledge of curriculum and best practices.
  2. Highly developed presentation skills
  3. Knowledge of effective staff development models that lead to the successful development of effective teachers
  4. Excellent oral and written communication skills
  5. Considerable human relations and human development skills
  6. Demonstrated leadership ability
  7. Good technical skills with technology and presentation tools
  8. Ability to use common office machines and popular computer-driven word processing, spreadsheet and file maintenance programs
  9. Ability to maintain complete and accurate records and statistics and to develop meaningful reports from that information
  10. Ability to plan and evaluate strategies for new teacher development
  11. Ability to exercise considerable tact and courtesy in frequent contact with the public
  12. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments
  13. Ability to work with adult learners
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Full-time for ten (10) months
Salary based on state and local salary schedules
