Joining the Chatham County Detention Center as a Deputy Sheriff Recruit can be an exhilarating opportunity for anyone passionate about law enforcement. With a starting salary of $45,837 and additional pay awarded for experience in Law Enforcement, Corrections, or Military, this position offers the potential for a fulfilling and lucrative career. Plus, upon successfully completing the Academy and receiving your P.O.S.T. certification, you'll be promoted to Deputy Sheriff Advance with an impressive new salary of $53,677. Examples of Duties
After completion of Basic Jail Officer certification, you will
- Train under a Jail Training Officer (JTO) for an initial training phase
- Attend and complete 13 weeks of training for Georgia P.O.S.T. Certification
- Perform law enforcement and public safety work for Chatham County Sheriff's Office
- Book, process, search, and seize personal property of arrestees and new inmates
- Issue uniforms, escort and secure inmates, maintain shift logs, and maintain order in housing areas
- Respond to assistance calls and operate security checks under the Guardian system
- Direct and Indirect Supervision facility
- Adhere to a 12-month probation period policy
- Other duties may be assigned
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED from an accredited school
- One year of work experience involving public contact
- Minimum age of 21
- Valid driver's license
- Correctable vision to 20/20 or 20/40 in each eye
- Physical and psychological exams, drug screening, and background investigations must be passed.

This requirement applies to first offenders, as per Georgia State Law 25-8-7.1.

You must sign a conditional written agreement for this position, which requires salary reimbursement for voluntary separation within two (2) years of completing P.O.S.T. Basic Law Enforcement Training Academy.
This is a safety sensitive position and subject to random drug testing.
During emergencies and disasters affecting Chatham County, you may be required to report to work as part of a disaster operations team.
In accordance with the Department of Transportation, Commercial Driver's License (CDL) holders and those employed in safety-sensitive positions are subject to random drug testing.
Candidates with direct and relevant experience may receive an offer of up to 10% above the minimum salary that is posted, reflecting their exceptional qualifications.
