Job Title: Mechanical/Hardware Engineer

Location: Sunnyvale – Onsite

Duration: 12 Months


Role Overview

Seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer to join its Networking Mechanical Team in Sunnyvale, California. The role focuses on the complete mechanical development lifecycle of rack-mounted networking hardware products, from concept design through production release (RTM – Release to Manufacturing).

This position requires a highly hands-on engineer who can work in a fast-paced product development environment with short development cycles. The engineer will collaborate with cross-functional teams and take ownership of technical mechanical decisions, product validation, compliance, and manufacturing readiness.

Key Responsibilities

Product Design & Development

  • Design rack-mounted networking hardware systems from concept to production.
  • Create and manage:
  • Mechanical designs
  • BOMs (Bill of Materials)
  • Prototype builds
  • ECOs (Engineering Change Orders)
  • Conduct design reviews and ensure manufacturing readiness.

Technical Leadership

  • Lead technical decision-making for assigned projects.
  • Define and contribute to system specifications and unit-level requirements.
  • Establish technical direction aligned with HPE networking goals.
  • Identify design dependencies, risks, and recommend improvements.

Thermal & Cooling Solutions

  • Evaluate and integrate advanced cooling technologies, including liquid cooling.
  • Support thermal design, thermal profiling, and management of external thermal consultants/resources.

Cross-Functional Coordination

  • Work closely with:
  • Electrical engineering teams
  • Manufacturing
  • Compliance teams
  • Supply chain and sourcing
  • Track schedules, deliverables, and resolve technical issues across teams.

Compliance & Validation

  • Support regulatory and industry compliance testing such as:
  • NEBS
  • EMI/EMC
  • Safety certifications
  • Ensure products meet networking hardware standards and agency requirements.

Required Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) or equivalent.
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in electro-mechanical product design.

Preferred Background

Experience in one or more of the following:

  • Networking products
  • Server hardware
  • Storage systems

Preferred Education

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (MSME) or equivalent.

Technical Skills Required

CAD & Design Tools

  • Strong experience with 3D solid modeling software.
  • Preferred:
  • SolidWorks
  • EPDM/PDM systems

Mechanical Engineering Expertise

  • GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing)
  • Tolerance analysis
  • FEA (Finite Element Analysis)

Manufacturing Knowledge

  • Sheet metal design for low- and mid-volume production.
  • Understanding of:
  • Plastic tooling
  • Aluminum extrusions
  • Die casting processes

PCB/Mechanical Integration

  • Familiarity with:
  • IDF workflows
  • ECAD-MCAD integration processes

Thermal & Cooling

  • Strong understanding of:
  • Thermal management
  • Advanced cooling systems
  • Liquid cooling technologies

Compliance Knowledge

  • NEBS standards
  • EMI/EMC compliance
  • Product safety regulations

Soft Skills & Project Management

The ideal candidate should also demonstrate:

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills
  • Ability to manage schedules and project timelines
  • Budget awareness for:
  • Parts
  • Tooling
  • External resources
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced engineering environment

Ideal Candidate Profile

This role is best suited for a Mechanical Engineer who:

  • Has experience designing enterprise hardware products
  • Is comfortable working hands-on with prototypes and manufacturing
  • Understands both mechanical and thermal challenges in networking equipment
  • Can independently lead technical execution while coordinating across teams

This is a strong opportunity for a mid-to-senior level mechanical engineer with experience in enterprise hardware systems, especially networking, server, or storage products. The role combines mechanical design, thermal engineering, manufacturing, and technical leadership within HPE’s networking division.
