On the site of the Good Friday fire of 1788, stands this current structure, built in 1830, by Major Gally, founder of the“Battallion d’ Artillirie” during the Mexican War of 1846. Located in what was once the fashionable shopping district of the Vieux Carre, this distinct 4 story brick structure, known as Gally House was designed to be retail merchants on the first floor, townhouse apartments above, with servants' quarters and dry closets connected by a series of catwalks. Chartres House opened in 2004 across the street in the historic Reynes Mansion and relocated in 2019 to this amazing, larger building, so that we could continue its journey becoming a true New Orleans icon.
