What are the responsibilities and job description for the Draft Horse Teamster Wanted – Weekend Driver, Candia NH (We Train You) position at Charmingfare Farm?
Draft Horse Teamster — Weekend Driver (We’ll Train You to Drive)
$16 – $20/hr. Weekends, September through March. Candia NH, 20 minutes east of Manchester.
We run 10 draft horses, a team of mules and a pair of oxen at a working farm and year-round attraction. Fall is wagon rides, then Christmas, then sleigh rides every time we get snow. I’m hiring a few people this season and teaching them to drive.
What you’ll be doing
Driving our Percherons and Belgians on wagon rides in the fall and sleigh rides through the winter, with families riding behind you. Singles and pairs, nothing bigger.
You’ll start on the ground and beside an experienced teamster, learning our horses, our harness and our routes. You take the lines when you’re ready. Some people get there quickly, some take longer, and nobody gets pushed.
Between rides you’ll be harnessing, unharnessing, feeding, and helping keep the barn and grounds in shape.
About you
- You’ve spent real time around horses. Riding barn, boarding stable, 4-H, family farm, doesn’t matter. You’re steady on the ground with a big animal and you’ve done the daily work, not just the fun part.
- You’re good with people, which matters as much as the horse part. The guests are riding right behind you, and how the ride goes is mostly up to you.
- You’re around most weekends and holidays from September through March, and you can get to Candia. Weather is part of the job. Valid driver’s license, 18 or older.
- No driving experience needed. That’s what I’m teaching you.
What I’m offering
- $16 – $20 an hour while you’re learning. Once you’re driving on your own, you’re in the tips, and guests tip for the ride they get. The better you are with them, the better they tip you.
- Training on real teams from teamsters who’ve been at this for years. Once you can drive, you can drive anywhere.
- Training sessions in September before the season starts, so you’re ready when the crowds show up.
