Position Description
The position requires patience, respect for children, and the ability to encourage the children to be independent. The Extended Day Teacher works in conjunction with the Lead and Assistant Teachers in the Pre-Primary classroom with children ages 2-3, gradually assuming care of the children throughout the afternoon, with a general schedule from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. This person will also be required, if needed by the Division Head, to come in for coverage on days when the Early School requires full-day child care when regular classes are not in session, on professional development days, or on conference days.
This is a full-time, 30-hour/week, non-exempt, 10-month position.

GENERAL DUTIES
- Plan, prepare, and lead activities for and with the children throughout the end of the day, including (but not limited to) story time, music and movement, art experiences, group games, and free play.
- Collaborate with other extended day teachers to provide a consistent, enriching experience across classrooms.
- Be actively involved with the Lead and Assistant Teachers in toilet learning/stand-up diapering, restroom monitoring, and supervision of nap time and playground time.
- Assist the children by moving around to support their independence during free play: choosing individual activities, using materials purposefully and constructively, and returning each activity to its original place when the child completes his task.
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with children, parents, and co-workers. Communicating information daily about the children to and from the daytime teachers.
- Be responsible for the cleanliness of the classroom; understanding the placement of the Montessori materials to keep them set and ready for the next day; daily cleaning of tabletops/surfaces; weekly dusting of shelves and bookcases; daily disinfecting of work areas.
- Participate in Early School events as requested by the Head of Early School.
- Abide by all guidelines outlined in the school's handbooks, policies, rules and regulations, as adopted.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Division Head, Extended Day Coordinator, and/or Head of School.
- Early Childhood Education Certification or equivalent strongly preferred; some knowledge of Montessori philosophy desirable but not required.
- 1 year related experience, especially working with toddler-aged children in a group setting and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Team-oriented with the ability to work effectively with all members of the Charlotte Prep community.
- Strong communication and organizational skills with high levels of attention to detail.
- Positive, enthusiastic, flexible, and warm personality.
- Strong work ethic, proactive, and success-oriented.
- Demonstrates patience and respect for small children and their natural development as inherent throughout the teachings and philosophy of Maria Montessori.
