Description

Performs routine protective service work in the enforcement of local ordinances and state laws regarding the keeping of animals within the City. Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and some experience in work involving the care of animals and dealing with the public. Must possess basic computer skills using Windows and Microsoft Office. Applicants must possess a valid Virginia driver’s license and a driving record that meets City standards, must be able to walk under various topographical conditions, be able to lift 50 pounds, and be able to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends, when necessary.

Essential Duties

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties necessary to deliver services to customers and citizens may be assigned.

  • Receives and investigates citizen complaints relating to dogs, cats, and other animals.
  • Locates, captures, and transports abandoned and stray dogs, cats, and other animals.
  • Issue summonses to animal owners in violation of animal control ordinances.
  • Prepares reports and maintains appropriate records.
  • Performs routine patrol.
  • Set up traps and prepares reports and maintains log on trap locations.
  • Testifies in court involving enforcement of animal control ordinances.
  • Maintains equipment and vehicles.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Include The Following

  • Other duties to provide direct or indirect service to the citizens may be assigned.
  • When unusual situations occur and/or the City Manager declares a State of Emergency, all City employees may be required to accept special assignments and perform as needed to ensure appropriate service delivery.

Minimum Education And Experience Required

QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education And/Or Experience

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and some experience in work involving the care of animals and dealing with the public; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Additional Requirements

Possession of a valid driver's permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia and acceptable driving record according to City criteria.

Ability to successfully complete State certification.

Full Time Classified Positions

The Virginia Retirement System (VRS) is a defined benefit plan. Defined benefit plans promise employees a lifetime monthly benefit payable at retirement. The City pays 18.79% and employees pay 5% of base pay (pre-tax) towards VRS benefit.
