POSITION TITLE: Counselor DEPARTMENT: Middle School
REPORTS TO: Head of Middle School
FLSA: Exempt
TERM: 10 Months
POSTION SUMMARY: The Middle School Counselor works to improve student well-being by implementing a comprehensive program, which includes individual counseling, group counseling, classroom lessons and consultation with teachers and outside professionals. Will work in conjunction with Director of Middle School Counseling.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Individual Counseling
- Available for students, parents and faculty as needed, requested, or required
Classroom Lessons
- Regular classroom contact in all four grade levels (grades 5, 6, 7, and 8)
Supervision of Advisory Program
- Provide advisory materials at each grade level
- Encourage faculty to share examples of advisory activities at either faculty, grade level or team meetings
- Be a resource for faculty in planning for advisory
- Faculty training as needed
- Training for new faculty at the start of the year and ongoing support through the year
Small groups
- Offer and provide grade level divorce and loss groups for students (as needed)
- Offer and provide grade level new student groups
- Offer and provide groups that support new or voiced need by the students (as needed)
Consultant Role
- Be a source for faculty to talk through any student- or advisory-related issue in confidence
- Be a source for parents to talk through any issue in confidence
- Refer student, parents or faculty to outside counseling sources as needed or requested
- Develop and maintain relationships with therapists, psychologist, and psychiatrists in Charlotte area
Meeting Attendance
- Team meetings
- Middle School Leadership Team
- Individual meetings with Division Head
- Student meetings involving a Psychologist or Testing Personnel when emotional/social/other counseling-related issues are present
- Other meetings and parent conferences as requested
- Regular meetings with Director of Middle School Counseling
Other
- Assist in student leadership training when requested
- Assist or lead faculty training on a topic considered within counselor domain (ex’s – advisory, signs and symptoms of depression, etc.) and/or as requested
- Assist in planning Parent Education speakers and programs
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master’s degree in mental health field
- 3 years mental health or similar experience
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills
- Demonstrated ability to communicate with diverse faculty and student populations
PERSONAL QUALITIES:
- Ability to relate and interact with middle school-aged students
- Ability to collaborate and work with faculty and staff
- Empathetic and eager to engage actively with students, faculty, and parent community
