After School Counselor

Position Summary
The Afterschool Counselor is an energetic, caring, and dependable team member who helps make each afternoon fun, meaningful, and safe for students from preschool through 7th grade. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working with children, building relationships, leading activities, and creating an environment where students feel supported and excited to learn and play. Counselors work closely with the Site Coordinator and fellow staff to create a welcoming after-school experience while supporting students’ academic, social, and personal growth.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Keep students safe through active, attentive, and enthusiastic supervision.
• Build positive relationships with students, families, and fellow staff members.
• Be a positive role model by demonstrating patience, kindness, responsibility, cooperation, and respect.
• Lead and participate in fun, age-appropriate enrichment activities, games, arts and crafts, STEAM activities, and other daily programming.
• Help students with homework and provide academic support when needed.
• Assist with attendance, check-in and dismissal, snack distribution, transitions, and other daily program routines.
• Create an inclusive and welcoming environment for students with different ages, interests, personalities, and developmental needs.
• Encourage positive behavior, help students resolve conflicts, and consistently reinforce program expectations.
• Communicate student needs, behavioral concerns, injuries, illnesses, and safety issues promptly to the Site Coordinator.
• Collaborate with the Site Coordinator and other counselors to plan activities and provide a high-quality program experience.
• Keep classrooms, activity areas, playgrounds, and shared spaces clean, organized, and ready for students.
• Participate in required staff meetings, trainings, and professional development opportunities.
• Arrive prepared and on time and remain engaged with students throughout the scheduled shift.
• Follow Charleston County School District policies, Kaleidoscope procedures, safety requirements, and Site Coordinator directions.
• Protect the confidentiality of student and family information.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Key Skills and Qualifications

• GED or High School Diploma required.
• CPR and First Aid certification preferred.
• Experience in childcare, education, recreation, summer camps, or after-school programs is preferred.
• Strong communication, teamwork, and relationship-building skills.
• Patience, dependability, flexibility, and enthusiasm.
• Ability to engage students in both learning and recreational activities.
• Ability to manage groups of children while maintaining a safe, positive, and respectful environment.
• A commitment to making every student feel welcome, supported, and valued.

Pay: $19.00 per hour
