Animal Care Technician I

The Technician I role is an entry-level, training-focused position responsible for learning and performing essential operational, administrative, and technical tasks that support laboratory animal studies. Under close supervision, the Technician I gains proficiency in animal husbandry, data documentation, and facility support while working collaboratively in a team environment.

This role provides hands-on training and is ideal for candidates interested in animal care, research support, or laboratory operations. No prior experience is required.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

• Provide humane care and ensure animal welfare through gentle, positive human-animal interactions
• Train on core animal husbandry tasks, including:
• Feeding and watering
• Cleaning and sanitizing primary and secondary enclosures
• Environmental enrichment
• Handling, restraint, and sexing of multiple species (based on training plan)
• Assist with animal movement and transport within the facility
• Stock supplies and maintain organized work areas
• Collect, document, review, and verify study data using paper forms or electronic systems
• Review documentation to meet quality control and compliance standards
• Safely use and maintain laboratory instruments and equipment
• Follow all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), safety protocols, and regulatory requirements
• Perform other related duties as assigned

Qualifications

Education & Experience

• High school diploma or GED preferred
• No prior experience required
• Equivalent combinations of education and experience accepted

Skills & Abilities

• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Basic computer proficiency (e.g., Microsoft Office) and ability to learn validated systems
• Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines
• Attention to detail and accuracy in documentation
• Ability to follow Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), SOPs, BOPs, and IACUC guidelines
• Commitment to safety and proper use of PPE

Schedule Flexibility

• Ability to work extended or variable hours, including evenings, weekends, holidays, or short-notice shifts
• Ability to work under time constraints

Physical Requirements

• Ability to lift, move, or restrain objects or animals weighing up to 50 pounds
• Ability to stand, sit, and perform repetitive motions for extended periods
• Frequent use of fine motor skills for animal handling and procedures
• Ability to wear required PPE and work in confined spaces
• Vision requirements include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment

Work Environment

• Research and laboratory setting
• Exposure to live animals, allergens, zoonotic diseases, and biohazards
• Use of sharp instruments and exposure to mechanical equipment
• Potential exposure to chemicals, fumes, airborne particles, and biological agents
• Noise levels range from low to high depending on species housed

Pay: From $18.00 per hour
