Bailiffs serve under the direction of the Director of Court Operations and the judge in the courtroom they are serving with general oversight by the Court Administrator and Administrative Judge. The Bailiff is responsible for assisting the court by performing specific functions during the courtroom trial process. The Bailiff is primarily responsible to the Judge, generally oversees and aids jurors in the performance of their duties and may be called upon to assist other court staff.

This is a part-time position, expected to work approximately 18-20 hours per week. Work schedule will vary based on the operational needs of the court.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
  • Set up courtroom for the docket.

  • Prepare jury room to include disinfecting spaces, make sure the room is stocked with cups, spoons, and condiments; have note pads and pencils accessible for jurors.

  • Assist in transferring paperwork relative to the case process to the Judge.

  • Assist with voir dire by keeping accurate record of juror numbers, and seating of jury panel.

  • Communicate with the jurors as directed by the Judge.

  • Escorts jurors between jury orientation room, jury deliberation room, and courtrooms.

  • Ensure jurors are familiar with jury room or assigned location, assist with any special needs, bring notes or requests to the Judge’s attention.

  • Reassemble jurors from lunch or recess, make sure they all return to the jury room and advise the Judge once they have all arrived.

  • If a meal is provided to jurors, the bailiff will assist in placing the order and distributing food to jurors.

  • When jury is deliberating, act as liaison between Judge and the jury, transport jury instructions and exhibits from the courtroom to jurors.

  • Notify all courtroom personnel, judge, and attorneys when a verdict is reached.

  • When the jury trial is concluded, dispose of all trash in jury room and courtroom, empty water carafes from jury room and courtroom, replace note pads and pencils after removing all used pages.

  • Make sure courtroom, jury room, and jury bathrooms are presentable and ready for the next session of court.

  • Notifies Court Security of problems or potential problems.

  • Escort domestic violence petitioners out of the building or to the appropriate area in the building following a domestic violence hearing.

  • Other duties may be assigned as needed by the Court.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION

THE CONDITIONS OF THE BAILIFFS’ EMPLOYMENT ARE AS FOLLOWS:

  • Starting time is 9:00 a.m. or as otherwise directed by the judge.

  • Bailiffs are part-time, hourly employees whose work schedule is determined on an as-needed basis.

  • This position does not offer county benefits.

  • Bailiffs are paid for each hour or partial hour that they work.

  • Bailiffs are at-will employees who serve at the pleasure of the administrative judge. Bailiffs may be dismissed with or without cause.

  • Must take and pass a pre-employment background screening.
