Substance Abuse Counselor

Job Summary
We are seeking a compassionate and dedicated Substance Abuse Counselor to join our mental health and addiction treatment team. The counselor will provide comprehensive clinical support to individuals struggling with substance use disorders, utilizing evidence-based practices to facilitate recovery and improve overall well-being. This role involves working closely with patients across various settings, including outpatient, inpatient, and community-based programs, ensuring adherence to HIPAA regulations and maintaining accurate medical documentation. The ideal candidate will possess strong skills in psychotherapy, crisis intervention, and case management, with a focus on behavioral health and addiction medicine.

Duties

• Conduct thorough patient assessments to evaluate substance use history, mental health status, and readiness for change
• Develop individualized treatment plans incorporating cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, and other therapeutic modalities
• Facilitate individual and group counseling sessions aimed at addiction recovery, relapse prevention, and behavioral management
• Provide crisis intervention and manage acute behavioral health episodes with professionalism and sensitivity
• Document all patient interactions accurately in medical records using ICD-9, ICD-10, CPT coding, and other relevant medical terminology
• Coordinate care with multidisciplinary teams including social workers, medical staff, and community resources for comprehensive case management
• Educate patients and their families on addiction processes, coping strategies, and available community resources
• Ensure compliance with HIPAA regulations and maintain confidentiality of patient records at all times
• Participate in ongoing research initiatives related to behavioral health outcomes and treatment efficacy
• Maintain current knowledge of diagnostic evaluation techniques, ICD coding updates, and advances in addiction medicine

Experience

• Proven experience in mental health counseling or behavioral health settings with a focus on addiction counseling or clinical counseling preferred
• Familiarity with crisis management techniques, PTSD care, home & community care experience, hospital experience is advantageous
• Knowledge of medical documentation standards including ICD coding (ICD-9/ICD-10), CPT coding, and medical terminology required
• Experience conducting intake assessments, individual/group therapy sessions, and behavior management strategies essential
• Strong background in psychotherapy modalities such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), applied behavior analysis (ABA), and behavioral therapy techniques necessary
• Prior work involving patient care in hospital or outpatient facilities is highly desirable
• Ability to handle sensitive situations involving crisis intervention or mental health emergencies with professionalism

Education required: Master's Degree. Must be licensed in North Carolina as an addiction/substance use specialist with at least one-year of full-time experience treating individuals with Co-Occurring disorders and who are dually diagnosed with mental health and substance use disorders. Qualified Professional (QP) status is required with a designation of CCS, LCAS, or LCAS-A.

Qualifications:

• Must be licensed as an LCAS or LCAS-A.
• Must be able to conduct group and individual therapy for consumers enrolled in our SACOT and SAIOP programs.
• Must be a team player.
• Must be willing to take all state-mandated training pertaining to SAIOP/SACOT service definition.
• Must be eager and willing to conduct group and individual therapy and adhere to documentation guidelines established by Chardevelop LLC as it relates to timeliness.

LCAS or LCAS-A is responsible for conducting a comprehensive clinical assessments. Tracking beneficiary's readiness to change, providing care coordination and case management services.

Work experience: A minimum of one (1) year work experience in the human services field as a Substance Use Counselor with the population served.

Travel Requirements: Valid Driver’s License and insurance required. Travel will vary depending on the daily schedule for this position.

Pay: $38,000.00 - $45,000.00 per year
