Corrections Captain – Jackson County, Missouri

Jackson County is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Corrections Captain to provide strategic leadership and operational oversight across the Detention Center.

What You’ll Do
- Lead and manage all daily detention operations through subordinate supervisors and shift leaders.
- Ensure facility safety, inmate security, and staff compliance with all laws, policies, and ACA standards.
- Review reports, shift logs, and documentation for accuracy and completeness.
- Conduct staff briefings, performance evaluations, and disciplinary actions when needed.
- Oversee scheduling, staffing levels, and overtime to maintain operational efficiency.
- Investigate and resolve staff grievances, complaints, and misconduct.
- Serve as Acting Manager of Detention (MOD) during absences.
- Set and track quarterly and annual operational goals aligned with department objectives.
- Conduct facility inspections, shakedowns, and audits to identify and correct security or compliance gaps.
- Review and approve inmate disciplinary actions and serve as the first-level appeal reviewer.
- Monitor and analyze data from BARIS, ALERT, and InfiniTime systems for staffing, incident, and attendance tracking.
- Lead staff training, emergency drills, and readiness programs to ensure safety and accountability.
- Oversee intake, classification, and release processes in accordance with legal and departmental guidelines.
- Coordinate emergency responses (fires, medical crises, disturbances, etc.) and ensure proper documentation.
- Represent the department in union meetings, grievance hearings, and interagency collaborations.
- Maintain 24/7 leadership availability for major incidents or emergencies.
Qualifications
- Education: Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice or related field (preferred).
- Experience: Minimum of three (3) years in corrections or law enforcement leadership at Lieutenant level or higher.
- Successful completion of the Jail Academy and ongoing firearms qualification (required).
- Certified in First Aid, CPR, and AED.
- Valid Missouri or Kansas Driver’s License and an active telephone.
- Must pass a background check, physical exam, drug screening, and MVR review.
- Must maintain a satisfactory performance rating (“Meets Expectations” or above).

Working Environment
- Work performed in a secure correctional facility with frequent inmate interaction.
- Potential exposure to volatile situations, biohazards, or communicable diseases.
- Requires standing, walking, and occasional lifting up to 100 lbs.
- May include outdoor duties or transport operations in varying weather conditions.
- Must be available for on-call response, overtime, weekends, and holidays as needed.
