Corrections Sergeant – Jackson County, Missouri

Jackson County is hiring an experienced and motivated Corrections Sergeant to join our Corrections Department. In this leadership role, you will supervise correctional staff, maintain facility security, and ensure the safe, orderly, and efficient operation of assigned areas within the Jackson County Detention Center.

What You’ll Do
- Supervise and lead a team of Corrections Officers and Master Corrections Officers.
- Monitor staff performance, conduct evaluations, and provide coaching and ongoing training.
- Ensure compliance with all security, safety, and operational procedures.
- Oversee inmate housing, movements, and daily activities to maintain discipline and order.
- Conduct inspections, searches, and security checks to prevent contraband.
- Review and approve reports, logs, and other required documentation.
- Resolve inmate or staff concerns within assigned authority and escalate as needed.
- Coordinate daily shift operations, briefings, and assignments.
- Serve on Inmate Disciplinary and Classification Committees.
- Conduct fire and safety drills, ensuring all standards and procedures are followed.
- Support inmate transports, medical coordination, and court appearances as required.
- Lead by example — uphold professionalism, accountability, and departmental integrity.
- Step into Corrections Officer or Shift Supervisor duties when needed.
Qualifications
- Education: High School Diploma or GED required.
- Experience: Minimum of three (3) years in corrections or law enforcement.
- Must successfully complete the Jail Academy Exam.
- Maintain current firearms qualification and certifications in CPR, First Aid, and AED.
- Age: 20 years or older.
- Valid Missouri or Kansas Driver’s License.
- Must pass background check, drug screening, and MVR review.
- Must maintain an active telephone and be available for evening, weekend, and emergency shifts.

- Strong communication and conflict-resolution skills.
- In-depth knowledge of correctional operations, safety protocols, and emergency response.
- Proficient in BARIS, ALERT, or similar correctional software systems.
- Sound judgment and decision-making under pressure.
- Skilled in documentation, report writing, and policy enforcement.
- Ability to motivate and develop staff while ensuring adherence to procedures.
- Strong organizational and problem-solving abilities.
Working Conditions
- Duties performed in a secure detention facility with daily inmate contact.
- Exposure to stressful or potentially volatile situations.
- Possible contact with communicable diseases or bodily fluids.
- Requires frequent standing, walking, and occasional lifting up to 50 lbs.
- Must be able to work mandatory overtime, weekends, holidays, and varying shifts.
