Bridge Inspection Supervisor
About the Role:
Our government client is seeking a dedicated and experienced Bridge Inspection Supervisor to play a critical role in maintaining public safety and safeguarding the state's infrastructure investments. This position involves leading a team of bridge inspectors and ensuring all inspections conform to national standards. Essential Responsibilities:
- Manage and lead the Bridge Inspection Team, continually developing and implementing improvements to work processes.
- Perform biennial inspections of bridges, large culverts (4' to 20' span), and retaining walls.
- Review and approve bridge inspection reports.
- Determine specialized bridge inspection needs and perform quality control reviews.
- Respond to emergency damage inspections (e.g., collision, high water).
- Conduct fracture critical, in-depth, and special inspections using access equipment.
- Prepare and submit reports for completed inspections, including recommendations for programming and cost estimates.
- Coordinate repairs for damaged bridges and monitor project schedules.
- Provide direct supervision for one or more staff members.
Required Qualifications:
- Registered Professional Engineer in Indiana, or ability to obtain within 6-9 months of hire.
- Bridge Inspection Team Leader certification, or ability to obtain within 12-15 months of hire.
- Understanding of how bridge and large culvert members function and impact load-carrying capability.
- Knowledge of inspection principles, practices, and techniques.
- Ability to read and interpret technical documents (design plans, inspection reports, maintenance records, geotechnical data, hydraulic data, maps).
- Knowledge of bridge maintenance principles, practices, methods, and techniques.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Basic computer skills and proficiency in new programs/databases.
- Valid Indiana driver's license.
- Physical ability to perform field inspections (standing, walking, climbing, lifting, etc.).
- Visual acuity for detailed inspections (peripheral, close, distant, depth perception).
- Ability to use inspection tools (pen, clipboard, camera, chipping hammer, range pole, measuring tape, spotlight).
- Ability to remain calm during emergencies.
- Knowledge and application of practices and methods in State Transportation.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Demonstrated experience using inspection access vehicles and platforms for arm's reach inspections.
- Certified Asbestos Inspector licensure or willingness to obtain.
- Certified SPRAT Level 1 climber or higher, or willingness to obtain.
- NHI course "Safety Inspection of In-Service Bridges" - Highly Desired
- NHI course "Fracture Critical Inspection Techniques for Steel Bridges" - Highly Desired
