Up to 25 hours per week; hours vary Monday–Thursday, 9 a.m.–6 p.m., and Friday–Saturday, 10 a.m.–2 p.m.

Job Summary


Multiple Positions.
The CGCC Writing Center fosters a community of writers by providing a place where
students and tutors come together to talk about writing. As a tutor you will provide students
help with their writing.


The CGCC Writing Center is NOT a proofreading service; instead, tutors help students
become stronger writers, not just help them to produce better papers. Writing tutors assist
students in all stages of the writing process: prewriting, drafting, revising, and presenting.

Essential Functions


90% - Tutors may help students generate and organize ideas, talk with students about organization and logic;
assist students with paragraphs and sentences; strategize with students to overcome writer's block; advise
students about the expectations of college writing; work with students who are culminating research projects;
aid ELL students in understanding the conventions for writing an essay in American Standard English; and help
students with persistent grammatical problems.

10% - Writing tutors may also support the Writing Center Coordinator in
  • preparing student resources
  • working on special projects
  • delivering Writing Center orientations
  • facilitating writing content workshops

Minimum Qualifications


1. Master’s Degree in English or related field
2. Experience tutoring or teaching English/writing at the college level
3. Excellent communication skills, both oral and written

Desired Qualifications


1. Strong willingness to learn and apply innovative strategies for supporting students
2. Sensitivity to varied learning styles and cultural differences
3. An interest in the process associated with learning, composing, reading
comprehension, and oral communication
4. Ability to work independently and professionally
5. Ability and willingness to participate in pre-semester training, and semester training
sessions
