What are the responsibilities and job description for the Registered Nurse- Vascular Procedural position at Champlain Valley Vascular Surgery?
Overview:
We are seeking a dedicated Registered Nurse to join our team. The ideal candidate will possess essential nursing skills to provide high-quality patient care.
Recovery RNs care for patients’ post-procedure. The type of care depends on what type of procedure is performed. Recovery RNs :
- Check vital signs, medical history and lab results to prepare patients for procedures.
- Insert and remove intravenous lines.
- Administer conscious sedation drugs and other medications.
- Oversee patient safety and comfort before, during and after procedures.
- Educate patients and their families about procedures, follow-up care and discharge instructions.
A recovery RN develops patient care plans with the surgeon. They also offer support to patients who are waking up from sedation post-procedure. This support can include maintaining a patient’s bandages, managing their pain, treating any postoperative nausea, and making sure that recovering patients get enough rest, nutrients, and fluids so they can heal.
Recovery RN jobs include observing a patient’s progress, recording their observations in the patient’s chart, and informing surgeon of changes to a patient’s progress post-procedure.
It’s also a recovery RN’s job to teach patients how to take their medication, how to clean wounds and bandage them, and any other post-procedure care instructions necessary before the patient can go home.

Recovery RN Job Qualifications
What kind of qualifications do you need to be a successful recovery RN? Qualifications include:
- An Associates/ Bachelor Degree in Nursing
- A state nursing license and/or certification to practice as an RN
- Basic Life Support (BLS or BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications
- Excellent skills in communication, interpersonal interactions, assessment, and working on a team
- Must be able to problem-solve
- Able to stand for long periods at a time
- Ability to make quick decisions, make urgent referrals to physicians, and work under pressure
Recovery RN Responsibilities
As a recovery RN, you will act as the primary caregiver to patients after a procedure. This includes performing ongoing assessments including observation, physical examination, laboratory/test results, and patient response to surgery.
You will be accountable for monitoring patient progress and updating patient medical records as needed.
Equally as important responsibilities include:
- Cleaning access points and managing bandages
- Applying pressure to access points
- Managing and administering medication
- Maintaining patient intravenous therapy
- Providing education to the patient/family/significant other according to organizational standards
- Reviewing and revising the plan of care according to changes in the patient’s status
- Ability to lift and assist patients when necessary
- Cleaning and preparing recovery area for the next day
