Summary Statement

Seeking a passionate, organized, and community-driven Independent Contractor to lead our Urban Agriculture Employment Program, a paid learning opportunity for community members to gain hands-on experience in gardening, CA native plant landscaping, and environmental stewardship.

This position is ideal for someone with experience in horticulture, workforce development, or education who thrives in a mission-driven, client-centered environment. The Urban Agriculture Employment Program Coordinator is responsible for planning, implementing, and overseeing a paid learning program focused on urban agriculture, animal care, and native plant care. This role supports participant engagement, coordinates training activities, liaises with staff and partners, and ensures program goals are met effectively and inclusively.

This seasonal program offers two cohorts (Fall and Spring), each composed of community members who will earn monthly stipends while learning to grow fruits and vegetables, care for California native plants, and help maintain our agency’s wellness garden and care for our chickens and rabbits.

Duties And Responsibilities

  • Develop, plan, and coordinate the urban agriculture employment training program schedule and curriculum focused on planting fruits and vegetables, native California plants, and landscaping maintenance.
  • Supervise and train clients on-site 3 days/week during active seasons, including occasional weekends
  • Support care and maintenance of chickens and rabbits, including feeding, cleaning enclosures, and teaching basic animal care practices
  • Facilitate hands-on learning in planting, harvesting, composting, and landscaping
  • Coordinate seasonal planting plans and maintenance schedule
  • Track participant attendance, progress, and outcomes
  • Coordinate procurement and management of program supplies and materials.
  • Collaborate with agency staff and community partners to enhance program resources and opportunities.
  • Submit monthly invoices and documentation of hours worked
  • Manage program budgets, including stipends and resource allocation, ensuring adherence to funding requirements.
  • Assist in program evaluation and continuous improvement efforts.
  • Ensure compliance with agency policies, safety standards, and relevant regulations.

Required

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

  • BA or MA in Environmental Studies, Youth Development, Education, or a related field preferred or equivalent relevant professional experience.
  • Minimum 2 years experience in urban agriculture, gardening, landscaping, or environmental education.
  • Ability to supervise and motivate participants 14-18 years old in a hands-on learning environment.
  • Comfort working around and caring for small animals (e.g., chickens, rabbits).
  • Basic knowledge of budgeting and program management.
  • Commitment to equity, inclusion, and trauma-informed practices.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.Ability to work flexible hours, including occasional weekends when required.
  • Bilingual (English and Spanish) preferred.

Salary : $30 - $30
