Position Overview
The Construction Purchasing Manager oversees the procurement of materials, equipment, and subcontracted services across multiple construction projects. This role ensures cost-effective purchasing, maintains strong vendor relationships, and leverages technology-driven tools to streamline processes, improve forecasting, and support data-driven decision-making.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage end-to-end purchasing for materials, equipment, and subcontracted labor.
- Develop purchasing strategies to reduce costs and support schedules.
- Source and evaluate suppliers based on price, quality, and reliability.
- Issue purchase orders and track deliveries.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with suppliers and subcontractors.
- Negotiate pricing and contract terms.
- Conduct vendor performance evaluations.
- Utilize ERP and construction management systems (Procore, Sage, Viewpoint, CMiC).
- Implement digital workflows and analyze purchasing data.
- Train staff on new procurement technology.
- Collaborate with the Controller on budgets, cost codes, and accounting alignment.
- Monitor pricing trends and identify cost-saving opportunities.
- Maintain accurate procurement documentation and audit trails.
- Coordinate with project managers, estimators, and field teams regarding material needs.
Qualifications
Required:
- 5–10 years of construction purchasing or supply chain experience.
- Strong knowledge of construction materials and subcontractor processes.
- Proficiency with ERP and procurement technology systems.
- Advanced Excel skills.
- Excellent negotiation, communication, and organizational abilities.
- Successfully operate in a high-volume, fast-paced procurement environment.
- Able to articulate and discuss cost-savings, cycle-time reduction, lead-time improvements, the number of Purchase orders processed, the dollar amount of projects, the number of suppliers they have dealt with, etc.
Preferred:
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Supply Chain, or Construction Management.
- Experience implementing procurement software.
- Power BI or advanced analytics capabilities.
