Job Summary

The Director of Human Resources provides strategic leadership and oversight for all HR functions firm-wide, including talent acquisition, compensation, benefits, compliance, and employee relations. The Director of HR reports directly to the Chief Operating Officer and will be based in Atlanta, Georgia or Houston, Texas.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Serve as a strategic partner to the COO on workforce planning, organizational structure, and talent strategy
  • Advise firm leadership on HR best practices, emerging legal trends, and market benchmarks to guide policy and decision-making
  • Lead the development and periodic review of firm-wide HR policies and procedures
  • Participate in national and regional HR and benefits surveys to form competitive positioning on compensation and total rewards
  • Collaborate with practice group leaders and department heads on staffing strategies and succession planning
  • Lead the annual review and administration of the Firm's compensation program, including analysis of market data and recommendations for merit and market salary adjustments to the COO
  • Develop and maintain a total rewards strategy that supports recruitment, retention, and equity across the Firm
  • Oversee annual benefits renewal process, including working with the broker and Benefits Committee on plan design, cost containment strategies, and carrier negotiations
  • Manage open enrollment, ongoing benefits education, and employee communications; ensure accurate enrollment and billing administration
  • Administer and promote Firm wellness programs as a component of the broader total rewards strategy
  • Prepare and file required regulatory reports including EEO-1, CMS, and Creditable Coverage Disclosure Notices
  • Lead recruitment strategy for all staff, partnering with department heads to identify needs and define role requirements
  • Create and maintain job descriptions
  • Collaborate with the COO to design and maintain a firm-wide position architecture for staff and manager roles, including defined career levels, progression criteria, and compensation bands that support retention and internal mobility
  • Design and implement onboarding and orientation programs
  • Oversee performance appraisal programs for staff and attorneys
  • Identify training and development; design and coordinate programs including compliance training (e.g., sexual harassment, HIPAA)
  • Serve as a primary resource for attorneys, managers, and staff on personnel matters
  • Collaborate with General Counsel to conduct confidential investigations into workplace complaints
  • Oversee progressive discipline administration and provide guidance to managers on performance management and documentation
  • Oversee FMLA requests, leaves of absence, and accommodations in compliance with applicable law
  • Respond to and monitor unemployment claims, Department of Labor inquiries, and TWC requests
  • Ensure firm-wide compliance with federal and state labor and employment laws across all office locations
  • Conduct or oversee termination meetings; review exit interview data for trends and escalate concerns to leadership
  • Determine and communicate the Firm's holiday schedule annually
  • Supervise and develop the HR team, fostering a culture of service, responsiveness, and continuous improvement
  • Maintain accurate employee records and documentation in compliance with firm policies and regulatory requirements


Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Minimum 10 years of progressive HR management experience, with at least 5 years in a law firm or professional services environment
  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field
  • SHRM-SCP or SPHR certification preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to operate as a strategic advisor to senior leadership while managing day-to-day HR operations
  • Deep knowledge of federal and state labor, employment, and benefits laws across multiple jurisdictions
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret compensation and HR data to drive recommendations
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to present complex information clearly to diverse audiences
  • High degree of discretion and professionalism in handling sensitive and confidential matters
  • Proven track record of building collaborative relationships across all levels of an organization
  • Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced, demanding environment
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite; experience with HRIS platforms preferred
