Salary Band:  Seasonal/Temporary

 

POSITION SUMMARY

The Summer Swim & Pool Director provides leadership and oversight for all aquatics programming within Chadwick Summer Programs, serving campers from age 4 through Grade 8 . This role is responsible for the safe, effective, and engaging operation of the pool and swim instruction program, including staff supervision, program quality, scheduling, and parent communication. Safety is the top priority at all times.

The Director ensures that all aquatics activities meet the highest standards of instruction, supervision, and risk management, while fostering a positive, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate experience for campers and staff.

 

The Summer Swim & Pool Director reports to the Director of Auxiliary and Innovative Programs.

 

Key Responsibilities and Expectations

 

  1. Leadership and Program Planning:
  • Provide overall leadership and strategic direction for all swim instruction and aquatics programming.
  • Ensure a safe, age-appropriate balance between structured swim instruction and recreational aquatic activities.
  • Review, refine, and approve all swim course descriptions, schedules, and program information in collaboration with the Director of Auxiliary and Innovative Programs to ensure accuracy and alignment with program outcomes.
  • Oversee daily pool operations, including activity flow, transitions, and adherence to published schedules.
  • Coordinate with other summer program directors to manage shared use of facilities and ensure compliance with required lifeguard-to-camper ratios.
  • Proactively identify opportunities for program improvement and future growth.

2. Aquatics Safety & Risk Management

  • Maintain the highest standards of pool safety, supervision, and emergency preparedness.
  • Ensure all aquatics activities comply with applicable health, safety, and school policies.
  • Monitor pool conditions, safety equipment, and emergency procedures daily.
  • Respond promptly and appropriately to incidents or safety concerns, communicating with administration as required.
  • Model and enforce clear expectations for camper behavior, staff professionalism, and safe pool conduct.

 

  1. Staff Recruitment, Training, and Supervision:
  • Recruit, interview, and recommend the hiring of qualified, certified lifeguards and aquatics staff.
  • Verify that all lifeguards possess current required certifications (e.g., Lifeguarding, CPR/AED, First Aid) prior to the start of the program.
  • Lead and oversee aquatics staff during mandatory training and orientation.
  • Supervise lifeguard staff daily, providing clear expectations, feedback, and support.
  • Conduct formal and informal performance evaluations throughout the summer.
  • Ensure accurate timekeeping and submission of hours worked by hourly aquatics staff.
  • Foster a positive, respectful, and professional staff culture focused on teamwork and accountability.

 

  1. Parent/Caregiver Communication:
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for aquatics-related questions or concerns.
  • Communicate proactively and professionally with parents/caregivers regarding:
    • Program logistics and expectations
    • Camper participation and progress (as appropriate)
    • Safety policies and procedures
  • Address concerns with empathy, clarity, and consistency.
  • Reinforce behavioral and safety expectations with campers and families as needed.

 

  1. Schedule and Time Commitment:
  • Attend all required planning meetings leading up to the summer session (monthly; mix of in-person and Zoom).
  • Maintain consistent communication with the Director of Auxiliary and Innovative Programs throughout the year.
  • Be physically present on campus daily during program hours to supervise pool operations.
  • Expected on-site hours during the summer session: 8:30 AM – 3:30 PM, Monday–Friday.

PLEASE NOTE:

 

•             Training Day (paid) is 8:30am-3pm, Saturday, June 20

•             Program Dates: June 22 - July 24 with July 3rd 0ff for Independence Day

•             Onboarding is required and can be by appointment

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Report to the Director of Auxiliary and Innovative Programs
  • Must maintain safe work practices and follow all safety and security procedures.
  • Must enjoy working with children Age 4-through Grade 8 .
  • Must attend a mandatory staff training day on Saturday, June 20th from 8:30am – 3:00pm
  • Must sign up for and attend a staff “onboarding” session during the week before the summer program begins (approx. 2 hours)
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications:

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS

Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Certification and all water safety training up-to-date.
  • Previous experience running a program and supervising employees/lifeguards preferred.

 

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

 

  • Required to lift and carry up to a maximum of 25 lbs., in a correct manner consistent with the appropriate training provided by the School.
  • Occasionally required to use hand to finger, handle or feel objects, touch and use tools, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, bend, stoop, twist, lift, reach, push, pull, grasp, balance, kneel, crouch, crawl, grasp, talk, hear, and walk during the course of employment.
  • Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and an ability to adjust focus.
  • May use telephone, computer, copier, and other office equipment in the course of a day.
  • Required to sit while operating word processing equipment, repetitive motion for typing and other keystroke needs.
  • Will require working with hot materials
