Job Summary

The Science Education Manager reports to the Director of Public Engagement and supports the delivery of high-quality, engaging science content and instruction across the Chabot Space & Science Center. This role requires knowledge of the scientific content behind Chabot’s curricula and the ability to translate scientific concepts into dynamic informal science educational experiences. These include workshops, live science shows, exhibit floor activities, nature and overnight programs, special events, and community outreach. The Science Education Manager supervises Science Associates, leads training for instructional staff, and ensures consistency and excellence in program delivery. This role also provides operational support for daily programming and serves as a backup for center-wide content delivery as needed. The ideal candidate brings strong systems thinking and a passion for building cohesive, space-focused informal science education experiences across programs and audiences. This is a full-time, on-site position that includes one weekend day and flexible hours to support periodic evening programs. During peak field trip season, the role requires on-site presence beginning at 8:30 AM, Wednesday through Friday, to support school field trips. Requirements / Qualifications

Required Skills/Abilities: Passion for science education, astronomy, and space science Experience managing classrooms and facilitating learning with groups of students or the public in other settings. Knowledge of inquiry-based pedagogical strategies and best practices in informal science education. Strong foundational knowledge of astronomy and its connections to broader STEM disciplines. Expertise in at least one science content area aligned with the Center’s core curriculum. Ability to communicate complex scientific concepts in engaging, accessible ways, especially for children and youth. Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills. Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) for documentation and presentations Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment. Flexibility and strong multitasking skills in a fast-paced, dynamic setting. Confidence in public speaking and leading group presentations. Preferred: Bilingual or multilingual skills (especially languages commonly spoken in the local community) Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree (BA or BS) in a STEM-related field. Teaching credential and 3 years of experience in project- or inquiry-based science instruction. Experience working with communities underrepresented in science and in museums. Experience in informal education environments, such as museums, parks, camps, community centers, or other similar settings. Experience providing formal or informal science education to elementary-aged youth. Experience coaching, mentoring, or supervising staff, preferably in an educational context.

Duties/Responsibilities: Science-Education Floor Activation Supervise and support Science Associates who provide informal science instruction for field trips, group programs, floor facilitation, overnights, and other educational activities. Hold responsibility for daily staff floor facilitation and field trip program execution. Develop, manage, and maintain the monthly staffing schedule and daily assignments for the Science Associate team in collaboration with field trip reservation staff. Serve as primary point of contact for Science Associate team including scheduling, communication and day-to-day support. Oversee daily setup and operation of floor experience and field trip programming: o Opening and closing Museum o Morning huddle o Workshop set up o Wayfinding o Teacher and load-out support Troubleshoot real-time curriculum, instruction, and student behavior issues in coordination with the Director of Public Engagement. Coordinate with other departments involved in the floor experience (Visitor Experience, Galaxy Explorers, Facilities, Volunteers). Deliver science instruction and floor facilitation personally as staffing needs require, including on short notice. Approximately 50% of time is spent on the Museum Floor. Science Curriculum, Instruction and Instructional Administration Train and coach staff in science content and informal instructional delivery across all program types demonstrating proficiency in Chabot’s core curricula. Develop, adapt and continuously improve curriculum for informal science programs, including K–12 workshops, Live Science programs, exhibit-based museum experiences, and off-site learning, under the guidance of Public Engagement priorities. Align all Field Trip content with NGSS standards. Serve as liaison with K-12 schools and science staff, gathering input to strengthen program relevance and impact. Maintain facilitation guides, education materials, and documentation systems. Manage program resources including supply ordering, equipment organization, and material preparation. Collaborate on cross-departmental initiatives with exhibits, public programs and events. Foster a positive and collaborative work environment and contribute to a culture of teamwork across the organization.
