What are the responsibilities and job description for the Controller position at CFO Services & Coaching?
CFO Services & Coaching | Suwanee, GA (Hybrid) Full-Time
Salary Range: $85,000-$105,000 benefits
CFO Services & Coaching is my fractional CFO and financial consulting practice serving small and mid-sized businesses in the Atlanta metro area. My clients typically have 30-50 employees and revenues from $4M to $30M, and they rely on me as their complete accounting and finance leadership: from monthly close through strategic advisory. The practice is growing, and this is my first hire; you'll work directly with me and help shape how this firm operates from day one.
You will own the monthly close and financial reporting process for my portfolio -- currently three companies, two of which are multi-entity groups -- with the goal of doubling that portfolio as the firm grows (and growing the team as needed). Each client has an in-house bookkeeper handling day-to-day transactions; you are the accounting professional who takes it from there: reviewing their work, closing the books, and producing financial statements that I present to business owners.
If closing multiple companies each month sounds daunting, here's the key: this is an AI-forward practice. I build AI and automation into my workflows so the repetitive parts of the close are streamlined, and your time goes to review, judgment, and clean financials -- not manual grind. The portfolio grows as the efficiency does, and the team grows with it.
This is a controller role with real variety: multiple companies, multiple industries, multiple accounting systems. If you're a strong senior accountant ready to step up, or an experienced controller who wants client-facing work without public accounting hours, this role is built for you.
- Perform the monthly close for a portfolio of companies: journal entries, accruals, prepaids, fixed assets, and account reconciliations (bank, credit card, inventory)
- Prepare, reconcile, and file monthly sales tax returns across applicable jurisdictions
- Review and correct bookkeeper-entered transactions; coach client bookkeepers on coding and process
- Prepare monthly and quarterly financial statement packages for my review and owner presentations
- Maintain intercompany accounts and multi-entity reporting
- Manage revenue and expense matching, including month-end revenue accruals where billing timing requires it
- Support payroll tax filings and compliance calendars
- Assist with accounting system (AIS) migrations, cleanups, and historical data tie-outs
- Visit client sites in the Atlanta metro area as needed (most work is remote/office-based)
- Over time, grow into advisory support work alongside me
Required:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting
- 5 years of accounting experience with full ownership of a monthly close
- Strong QuickBooks (Online and Desktop) skills
- Advanced Excel (pivot tables, lookups; comfort with large reconciliations)
- Multi-entity or multi-client experience
- Clear, professional communication: you'll interact with client bookkeepers and occasionally owners
- Self-directed: you'll manage your own close calendar across multiple companies
- Genuine openness to using AI tools in your daily work (I build AI into how this practice operates)
Preferred:
- CPA or actively pursuing CPA
- Experience using AI to build, document, or streamline accounting workflows
- Public accounting or outsourced accounting (CAS) background
- Experience with system conversions or additional accounting platforms (e.g., BQE, Sage, NetSuite)
- Experience in dealership, professional services, or retail industries
- Variety -- several companies and industries instead of the same close every month
- Mentorship -- work directly with me; a clear path from controller work into advisory and CFO-track skills
- Flexibility -- hybrid schedule based in Suwanee, with reasonable hours (this is not public accounting)
- Modern practice -- I invest in AI and automation so your time goes to real accounting work, and you'll help design those workflows as the firm scales
- Ground floor -- as my first hire, you help build the firm's processes and grow with the client base
- $85,000-$105,000 salary, based on experience
- Generous PTO and true schedule flexibility (hybrid, reasonable hours)
- CPA exam support -- exam fees, review course, and paid study time
- Tax-free health insurance reimbursement through a QSEHRA
- SIMPLE IRA retirement plan with employer match
Salary : $85,000 - $105,000
