ASSISTANT PROJECT MANAGER / ASSISTANT ESTIMATOR - ENVIRONMENTAL MATTING & ACCESS

As an Assistant Project Manager / Assistant Estimator - Environmental Matting & Access, you will support both estimating and project execution from initial bid documents through final closeout. You will assist with takeoffs, vendor pricing, estimate development, project controls, mat and rental tracking, quantity documentation, billing, change management, and customer deliverables while developing the technical and commercial skills required to grow within the Environmental Matting & Access group. The salary range is $64,000.00 - $90,000.00.

Responsibilities:
  • Gather and organize requests for proposal, access plans, drawings, specifications, schedules, permits, environmental requirements, RFIs, addenda, and related bid documents.
  • Assist with site walks and detailed quantity takeoffs for temporary access roads, work and crane pads, entrances, bridges, culverts, timber and composite matting, clearing, grading, stone, erosion controls, and restoration.
  • Support development of labor, equipment, mat, trucking, material, subcontractor, indirect, contingency, and risk costs using established production assumptions and estimating standards.
  • Solicit vendor and subcontractor quotations, confirm scope coverage, organize bid comparisons, and help identify exclusions, gaps, and best-value options.
  • Prepare bid forms, estimate backup, proposal exhibits, clarifications, and internal review materials; maintain accurate estimate files and cost databases.
  • Participate in estimate handoff and help establish project budgets, cost codes, procurement logs, schedules, resource plans, and contract-deliverable trackers.
  • Coordinate daily, weekly, and monthly project reporting, meeting minutes, submittals, correspondence, schedules, and customer deliverables.
  • Track mat inventory, deliveries, rental start and stop dates, utilization, field transfers, returns, damage or loss, trucking tickets, and vendor documentation.
  • Collect and reconcile field quantities, daily reports, tickets, and supporting documentation for unit-price billing and customer invoices.
  • Assist with commitments, purchase orders, subcontract administration, invoice review, cost reporting, forecasting, WIP preparation, billing, and receivables follow-up.
  • Identify potential changes, maintain change and RFI logs, assemble supporting documentation, and assist with change-order pricing and submission.
  • Coordinate with Operations, Field Leadership, Safety, Environmental, Fleet, Procurement, Scheduling, Project Controls, and other Riggs Distler operating groups.
  • Support compliance with project safety plans, environmental requirements, access restrictions, permits, restoration standards, and customer procedures.
  • Assist with project closeout, including final quantities, restoration documentation, punch-list completion, mat returns, vendor reconciliation, final billing, and lessons learned.
  • Provide responsive, professional service to customers, vendors, subcontractors, and internal stakeholders; escalate issues promptly and follow through to resolution.


Education, Skills, Experience Needed:
  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Environmental Science, Business, or a related field preferred; an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience will be considered.
  • Entry level - three years of estimating, project management, field, civil/site work, environmental, or utility construction experience preferred; a strong recent graduate will be considered and trained.
  • Basic understanding of construction plans, quantity takeoffs, estimating, project controls, cost reporting, and contract documentation, or the demonstrated ability to learn these areas quickly.
  • Interest in temporary access, environmental matting, civil construction, utility rights-of-way, erosion controls, restoration, logistics, and field operations.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook; experience with Bluebeam, HCSS HeavyBid, Primavera P6, Microsoft Project, CAD, or construction management software is preferred.
  • Strong analytical, mathematical, organizational, time-management, and problem-solving skills with close attention to detail and consistent follow-through.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with field teams, customers, vendors, subcontractors, and internal departments.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple assignments, take initiative, learn from feedback, adapt to changing project needs, and maintain a strong safety and customer focus.
  • Ability to travel and spend approximately 20% of working time in the field for site visits, project coordination, and operational support.
