What are the responsibilities and job description for the Automotive Diagnoistic Technician | 3 Day Weekends position at Centsible Auto Sales / Repair?
We are seeking a versatile, skilled Diagnostic & Repair Automotive Technician to handle full-spectrum vehicle servicing. This role combines advanced electrical diagnostics, component programming, and drivability troubleshooting with daily mechanical production, routine maintenance, and tire service.
You will be responsible for isolating root causes across complex electrical and electronic systems, executing remove-and-replace (R&R) repairs on defective mechanical and powertrain components, flashing/programming modules, and completing baseline scheduled services across a wide variety of makes and models.
Primary Responsibilities1. Diagnostics, Electrical & Programming
- Electrical Troubleshooting: Read and interpret wiring schematics to locate and repair open circuits, shorts to ground, high-resistance connections, parasitic draws, and data bus communication failures (CAN, LIN).
- System Diagnostics: Perform systematic root-cause analysis on drivability, powertrain, EVAP, emissions, ABS/traction, and secondary electrical faults using scan tools, digital multimeters, lab scopes, and smoke testers.
- Module Programming & Flashing: Perform OEM-level module flashing, key programming, parameter resets, software updates, and pass-thru reprogramming (J2534) on replaced control units (e.g., PCM, BCM, TCM, ABS modules).
- Sensor & Network Calibration: Complete post-repair sensor calibrations, adaptations, steering angle resets, and relearn procedures.
2. Component Removal & Replacement (R&R)
- Efficiently diagnose and replace defective powertrain, chassis, and accessory components, including:
- Starters, alternators, water pumps, fuel pumps, and A/C compressors.
- Steering and suspension assemblies (tie rods, ball joints, control arms, struts, steering racks).
- Brake hardware (rotors, calipers, pads, master cylinders, electronic parking brake actuators).
- Major and minor drivetrain components (axles, wheel bearings, intake/exhaust manifolds, timing components).
- Verify correct torque specs, fluid levels, and system bleeding (coolant, power steering, brakes) on all reassembly steps.
3. Tire & Wheel Service
- Mount, dismount, balance, rotate, and inspect passenger and light truck tires.
- Perform puncture repairs according to industry safety standards.
- Diagnose, service, and reprogram/relearn Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems (TPMS) sensors.
4. Scheduled Maintenance & Preventative Care
- Perform comprehensive multi-point vehicle inspections (MPI), identifying fluid leaks, component wear, and safety concerns.
- Carry out routine fluid exchanges (engine oil, transmission fluid, differentials, transfer cases, coolant, and brake fluid).
- Replace engine air filters, cabin filters, spark plugs, drive belts, and wiper assemblies.
5. Documentation & Quality Verification
- Clearly document diagnostic findings, test results (voltages, resistances, pressures), and replaced part numbers on work orders.
- Conduct thorough pre-repair verification and post-repair quality-control test drives, ensuring all readiness monitors, trouble codes, and customer concerns are fully resolved.
Required Qualifications & Experience
- Experience: Minimum of 3–5 years of professional automotive repair experience spanning mechanical R&R, routine maintenance, and dedicated electrical/drivability diagnostics.
- Technical Skills:
- Demonstrated proficiency reading OEM wiring schematics, technical service bulletins (TSBs), and pinout charts.
- Hands-on experience with bidirectional scan tools, pass-thru flash programmers (J2534), and digital multimeters.
- Solid mechanical ability across standard engine, suspension, brake, and chassis systems.
- Tools: Complete set of professional hand, air, and power tools, along with personal diagnostic meters and basic test leads (shop supplies heavy equipment, tire machinery, and primary scan tools).
- Licensing: Valid driver’s license with an insurable, clean driving record.
Preferred Certifications
- ASE Certifications (specifically A6 Electrical/Electronic Systems, A8 Engine Performance, and A4/A5 Steering/Suspension & Brakes), or ASE Master Technician status.
- Section 609 MACS Refrigerant Handling Certification.
