Position: Summer STEAM Instructor

Reports to: Education Director & Education Staff

Direct Reports: None

Dates/Hours: Staff Training & Classroom Prep: July 20 - 23 Mon-Thrs, 8:30am – 4:00pm

Parent Orientation: Thrs, July 23,6pm-7pm

Camp dates: July 27 - Aug 6 Mon-Thur, 8:30am – 4:00pm

FLSA Status: Independent Contractor

Compensation: $25/hr

SCOPE OF WORK OVERVIEW: PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Centro Cultural is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Summer STEAM instructor who will create an engaging and stimulating learning environment to foster students' interest and confidence in science, technology, engineering, art, and math. The successful candidate must have a solid understanding of STEAM subjects and be effective in implementing lesson plans.

SCOPE OF WORK BREAKDOWN: ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Facilitate academic and enrichment activities for a classroom of 25 students, including discussions to encourage students to develop Social Emotional Learning skills.
  • Build rapport with students and families and serve as a positive role model.
  • Prepare the classroom for daily activities.
  • Chaperone students (ex. the classroom, recess, and field trips)
  • Organize and manage multiple responsibilities successfully, including preparing lessons to meet student needs and program goals.
  • Manage the classroom effectively with strong classroom management skills, flexibility, and willingness to support wherever needed.
  • Work closely with the Centro Education Team to report class development and needed support, and collaborate with the STEAM teaching team.
  • Speak confidently and compassionately with parents, and be sensitive to the needs of a diverse student population and socio-economic status.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

The ideal candidate has the following skills and experiences or their equivalent, demonstrating ability to perform position responsibilities:

  • A passionate commitment to the goals and mission of Centro Cultural.
  • Understanding of Washington County low income, Latino community and other communities of color, and ability to convey program goals and activities to students and families.
  • At least 21 years old
  • STEM or Education college graduate, current college STEM or Education student
  • Knowledge and solid experience in one or more of the following: Teaching, STEAM Education, Science, Technology, Programming/Computer Science, Engineering and Mathematics.
  • Experience managing groups of children (1st-8th grades) in an education setting.
  • Eager to learn new content and take initiative.
  • Creative, trustworthy, high-energy, passionate for STEM and education, inspiring, excellent communication skills, and organized.
  • Ability to use computer programs and digital learning platforms, including Google Workspace applications such as Google Slides, Google Sheets, and Google Docs.
  • Bilingual English-Spanish preferred.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Complete and pass a Background Check
  • Possess current driver’s license and auto insurance coverage
  • Ability to travel out of town to attend workshops or trainings
  • Must be able to lift at least 35lbs

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

This position is approximately 90% in a classroom and educational program environment and 10% in community locations for field trips, outdoor recreation, and enrichment activities. Classroom working conditions are standard for an educational environment. Community locations may include parks, museums, community centers, libraries, and other field trip destinations. While performing the duties of this job, the employee will:

  • Engage in regular communication with students, families, and staff in person and through electronic means
  • Routinely use laptops, tablets, printers, projectors,photocopiers and monitors, and other classroom technology, including digital screens
  • Supervise and actively engage with elementary and middle school students in classroom, outdoor, and community based settings
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, and move throughout classrooms and activity spaces for extended periods of time
  • Assist with classroom setup, educational materials, student supplies, and activity equipment weighing up to 35 pounds
  • Occasionally required to stoop, kneel, bend, crouch, reach, and participate in recreational or hands on STEAM activities
  • Maintain awareness and responsiveness in active youth environments, including during transitions, recess, and field trips
