General Manager – District Energy Operations

Syracuse, NY


Position Summary

We are seeking a strategic, operationally focused General Manager to lead CenTrio’s Syracuse District Energy operations.


This leadership role is responsible for overall operational performance, including P&L management, plant reliability, environmental compliance, safety, capital planning, and customer service delivery. The General Manager will play a critical role in driving operational excellence while partnering with executive leadership to support long-term growth strategies and infrastructure expansion initiatives.


The ideal candidate brings strong utility or district energy operational leadership experience, combined with financial acumen and a passion for developing high-performing teams and resilient energy systems.


Key Responsibilities

District Energy & Utility Operations

  • Lead operations and management of district energy systems including:
  • Steam systems
  • Chilled water systems
  • Hot water systems
  • Electricity generation and distribution
  • Oversee utility infrastructure operations within a campus or large-scale facility environment
  • Ensure safe, reliable, and efficient delivery of utility services

Combined Heat & Power (CHP)

  • Provide leadership and operational oversight for CHP (Combined Heat & Power) systems
  • Optimize plant performance, reliability, and efficiency

Plant Operations & Asset Management

  • Oversee plant operations and distribution assets
  • Drive system reliability, operational performance, and efficiency targets
  • Lead maintenance planning and execution strategies
  • Utilize CMMS platforms to manage preventative maintenance and asset lifecycle programs

Capital Projects & Infrastructure

  • Manage capital improvement and infrastructure expansion projects
  • Oversee engineering and design coordination for distribution systems and interconnections
  • Support project execution from planning through commissioning
  • Ensure projects are delivered safely, efficiently, and within budget

Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS)

  • Ensure compliance with all environmental, health, and safety regulations and company policies
  • Promote a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement
  • Utilize EHS management systems such as EHS Insight or equivalent platforms

Financial & Operational Leadership

  • Maintain ownership of P&L performance and operational budgets
  • Lead forecasting, variance analysis, and financial reporting activities
  • Develop and monitor operational KPIs and performance metrics
  • Support accounts payable, payroll administration, and operational financial systems


Systems & Technical Tools

Enterprise & Operational Systems

  • CMMS platforms (e.g., MPulse or equivalent)
  • EHS management systems
  • Project management and operational reporting systems
  • HR and payroll administration tools

Microsoft Office Suite

  • Excel (financial analysis, modeling, KPI reporting)
  • PowerPoint (leadership presentations and reporting)
  • Word
  • Outlook
  • Visio (process mapping and system visualization)


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience within utility, district energy, or large-scale infrastructure environments
  • Strong understanding of thermal energy systems, boilers, chillers, and distribution networks
  • Experience with infrastructure expansion and customer interconnection design
  • Familiarity with utility billing systems, contract administration, and permitting processes
  • Exposure to tax coordination activities related to utility operations


Physical Requirements

This role includes both office and field-based work supporting active utility infrastructure systems.

  • Frequent standing, walking, climbing, and use of tools or controls
  • Occasional kneeling, crouching, crawling, or working in confined spaces
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs
  • Work may involve elevated temperatures, humidity, and outdoor/elevated environments including rooftops and cooling towers

  • Promote and maintain a safe work environment for all employees
  • Comply with all applicable environmental, health, and safety regulations and procedures
  • Identify and report workplace hazards and support corrective actions
  • Immediately report work-related incidents or injuries

Conditions of Employment

  • Occasional travel to other CenTrio locations
  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record required
  • Must meet company vehicle authorization requirements
