The Centre County Public Defender’s Office seeks a motivated and client-centered attorney to join a collaborative criminal defense practice representing indigent individuals at all stages of litigation. Attorneys in this role will gain immediate courtroom experience and take on early responsibility in case strategy, motion practice, and trial advocacy. Recent law school graduates are encouraged to apply and may be hired as Law Clerks pending bar admission, with transition to Assistant Public Defender upon admission to the Pennsylvania Bar.

Summary of Job Duties

• Represent indigent clients in criminal cases at all stages of litigation, from preliminary hearing through trial, sentencing, and post-conviction proceedings.
• Conduct preliminary hearings, pretrial conferences, and other court proceedings, and serve as lead counsel in bench and jury trials.
• Litigate pretrial motions, including suppression motions, and prepare written briefs.
• Develop case strategy through factual investigation, legal research, and collaboration with investigators, social workers, and support staff.
• Maintain regular client communication, provide legal advice, and ensure client-centered representation throughout the life of the case.
• Negotiate case resolutions with the District Attorney's Office while preparing all cases for trial.
• Interview witnesses, issue subpoenas, and prepare evidence for hearings and trial.
• Visit clients in custody, including county jail and state correctional institutions, as necessary.
• Draft pleadings, motions, and appellate filings, and assist with or handle appeals when assigned.
• Stay current on developments in criminal law and procedure and participate in public defender trainings.
• Work collaboratively with colleagues, court personnel, and other local government agencies in a professional environment.

Requirements

• Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
• Admission to the Pennsylvania Bar, or eligibility to sit for the next available bar exam.
• Strong legal research, writing, and oral advocacy skills.
• Demonstrated interest in criminal defense, public service, or litigation.
• Ability to manage a caseload and meet deadlines in a fast-paced work environment.
• Strong interpersonal skills and commitment to client-centered representation.
• Valid Pennsylvania driver's license and willingness to travel as needed.
• Ability to obtain required Child Abuse and FBI background checks.

Pay: From $75,004.80 per year
