Position Summary
Central Vermont Habitat for Humanity is seeking a detail-oriented and mission-driven Accounting Manager to oversee the organization's financial systems, reporting, and compliance. This position plays a vital role in ensuring accurate, transparent, and effective fiscal management while supporting our mission of building homes, community, and hope through affordable homeownership.
The Accounting Manager is responsible for managing day-to-day accounting operations, maintaining financial records, processing payroll, supporting budgeting and forecasting, tracking grants and restricted funds, and ensuring compliance with nonprofit accounting standards and regulatory requirements.
Reports to Executive Director
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Financial Management
● Manage all accounts payable and accounts receivable functions.
● Process payroll and maintain accurate payroll records.
● Maintain the general ledger and ensure accurate bookkeeping.
● Perform monthly bank, credit card, and account reconciliations.
● Maintain fixed asset and depreciation schedules as needed.
● Monitor organizational cash flow and assist with financial planning.
Financial Reporting
● Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
● Produce financial reports for the Executive Director and Board of Directors.
● Monitor organizational revenues, expenditures, and overall financial performance.
● Maintain accurate, organized, and secure financial records.
● Assist with preparation of year-end financial statements and audit schedules.
Grants, Donations & Restricted Funds
● Ensure proper accounting and reporting of restricted funds.
● Prepare financial information required for grant reimbursements and reporting.
● Support donor reporting and funding compliance requirements.
Budgeting & Financial Planning
● Assist in developing the organization's annual operating and project budgets.
● Support long-range financial forecasting and planning.
● Monitor project expenditures against approved budgets.
● Work with a volunteer finance committee to provide financial analysis and recommendations to leadership.
Compliance & Audit Support
● Ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), nonprofit accounting standards, and organizational financial policies.
● Prepare documentation and schedules for annual audits and financial reviews.
● Maintain internal financial controls and recommend process improvements.
● Assist with regulatory filings, including Form 990 and state reporting requirements.
Administrative & Organizational Support
● Maintain accounting software and financial recordkeeping systems.
● Assist with financial procedures, policies, and documentation.
● Work collaboratively with staff, volunteers, auditors, funders, and external partners.
● Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
● Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field preferred.
● Three or more years of accounting or bookkeeping experience; nonprofit accounting experience is strongly preferred.
● Experience with payroll processing, accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank reconciliations, and general ledger management.
● Experience with accounting software such as QuickBooks Online or similar financial management systems.
● Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office.
● Excellent organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail.
● Ability to manage multiple priorities while meeting deadlines.
● High level of integrity, professionalism, discretion, and confidentiality.
● Strong written and verbal communication skills.
