ESSENTIAL FUNCTION
Under the direction of the principal and the school nurse, provides a variety of health services to students.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
o Administer first aid to students
o Provide basic emergency care as needed, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation or other life sustaining efforts or procedures until medical assistance arrives.
o Dispense medication to students as prescribed by a physician
o Maintain up-to-date immunization records and health cumulative folders
o Assist with kindergarten registration and all other new students, and verifies shot records
o Input all emergency cards and immunization records into computer
o Keep daily logs of student visits and weekly medication sheets
o File hearing and vision referrals
o Assist district nurse with mandated testing
o Make home visits when necessary
o Bill for Medi-cal when appropriate
o Conduct inspections for head lice
o Administer specialized nursing procedures as needed
o Attends designated field trips and student curricular activities (such as Outdoor Education), in order to serve as the health care professional monitoring student needs
o Assure the health and safety of pupils by adhering to health and safety practices and procedures
o Attend trainings, as approved, to maintain current knowledge of medical laws, rules and regulations and technological advancements in the field of medicine
o Perform other related duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
Training and Education:
o High School Diploma or GED equivalent
o Current Licensed Vocational Nursing Certificate
o Valid California driver's license
o Valid first aid and CPR certificate
Other:
o Possession of a valid California Driver’s License.
Experience:
o Minimum of one year of LVN nursing skills, preferably in a school setting
o Basic computer/general office skills
Ability to:
o Work cooperatively with parents, students and staff members
o Be discreet, loyal, dependable
o Maintain confidential information
o Meet schedules and timelines
o Be able to react and perform appropriately in an emergency
Physical Requirements:
o Facility to sit or stand for extended periods of time
o Vision to see and read and distinguish colors, with or without correction, medical materials, student files and records, laws and rules and other printed matter
o Vision to observe physical symptoms of medical conditions.
o Hearing to understand speech at normal room levels, and to hear and understand speech on the telephone.
o Manual dexterity to operate office equipment and to utilize medical equipment using both hands.
o Speaking in audible tones so that others may clearly understand instructions in presentations, explanations and directions in normal conversations, in training sessions, on the playground, in other meetings and on the telephone.
o Physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds to shoulder height and up to 50 pounds to waist height, may be required to provide physical support to students weighing up to 175 pounds
o Physical agility to bend at the waist and turn/twist to examine students and administer first aid or CPR
o Operate a car to travel between school sites and for community visits
WORKING ENVIRONMENT
o Potential for contact with blood-borne pathogens and communicable diseases
o Office, school, campus, community environment, school field trips.
o Constant interruptions
