Senior IT Systems Engineer

Summary:

The Senior IT Systems Engineer architects, engineers, and operates enterprise infrastructure across servers, virtualization, networking, and hybrid cloud platforms. This role leads complex infrastructure initiatives, drives automation and platform reliability, and serves as the senior technical escalation point for critical production issues. The position requires deep expertise in Microsoft server technologies, VMware virtualization platforms, and Microsoft Azure services, with additional experience supporting Linux systems and SQL Server environments. The engineer mentors' technical staff, establishes infrastructure standards, and contributes to capacity planning and long-term platform strategy to ensure scalable, secure, and resilient systems.

Core Functions:

• Design and lead implementation of enterprise infrastructure across computer, storage, networking, and hybrid cloud environments.
• Engineer and operate VMware platforms including ESXi, vCenter, clustering, HA, resource management, lifecycle management, and performance optimization.
• Architect and administer Microsoft Azure and Microsoft 365 environments including identity, networking, security controls, and hybrid cloud integration.
• Administer core identity and directory services including Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS, DHCP, and authentication infrastructure.
• Deploy, secure, and maintain Windows Server and Linux platforms supporting enterprise services and business applications.
• Engineer and maintain enterprise networking including routing, switching, VPN, wireless, and firewall systems to ensure availability, security, and performance.
• Troubleshoot complex infrastructure issues across computer, storage, networking, and identity systems, serving as the Tier-3 escalation point.
• Design and maintain backup, disaster recovery, and business continuity solutions to ensure resilient and recoverable infrastructure.
• Lead infrastructure upgrades, platform migrations, and modernization initiatives with minimal operational impact.
• Develop and maintain architecture documentation, system standards, and operational runbooks supporting enterprise operations.
• Evaluate and recommend infrastructure technologies that improve reliability, scalability, and security.
• Mentor engineers and technical staff, strengthening engineering standards, troubleshooting practices, and operational maturity across the team.
• Partner with IT leadership to guide infrastructure strategy, capacity planning, and long-term technology roadmaps.

Education & Experience: 

Minimum Required:

• Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Systems, or related field preferred, or equivalent professional experience with a minimum of 7 years in enterprise infrastructure engineering or systems engineering roles.
• Engineer, implement, and maintain Windows Server environments including Active Directory Domain Services, Group Policy, DNS, DHCP, and enterprise identity infrastructure.
• Engineer and maintain VMware infrastructure including ESXi, vCenter, clustering, HA, storage integration, lifecycle management, and performance optimization.
• Hands on experience with Microsoft Azure platform services including identity, networking, and hybrid integration with on premises infrastructure.
• Strong understanding of enterprise networking architecture including LAN/WAN design, VPN technologies, wireless infrastructure, routing, switching, and firewall platforms.
• Demonstrated experience designing and maintaining enterprise backup, disaster recovery, and business continuity solutions.
• Proven ability to troubleshoot complex infrastructure issues across computers, storage, networking, virtualization, and identity services.
• Demonstrated experience developing PowerShell automation for infrastructure administration, operational workflows, and system management.
• Strong communication, documentation, and organizational skills.
• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple infrastructure priorities, projects, and operational responsibilities in a production environment.

Preferred:

• Industry certifications such as Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate, Azure Solutions Architect, or VMware Certified Professional (VCP).
• Working knowledge of Linux systems administration (RHEL, Ubuntu, or similar enterprise distributions).
• Experience administering Microsoft SQL Server including installation, maintenance, and performance troubleshooting.
• Experience with enterprise monitoring and observability platforms such as Zabbix, PRTG, SolarWinds, or VMware Aria Operations.
• Experience supporting multi-site enterprise or manufacturing infrastructure environments.
• Understanding enterprise security practices including patch management, vulnerability remediation, endpoint protection, and identity security.

Physical Demands & Work Environment:

Work is performed in both office and manufacturing environments. This role will routinely utilize standard office equipment, including computers, phones, and printers, to perform core functions, and will also interact with production areas, equipment, or machinery when visiting operational sites. The work requires a combination of sedentary and active tasks, including standing, walking, bending, reaching, driving, and occasional lifting of materials or tools weighing up to 50 pounds.

This role involves working in environments that may be loud, non–temperature-controlled and exposed to outdoor weather conditions. Employees frequently interact with machinery, moving objects, and vehicles. Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn as required by site policy when in designated production or operational areas.

Travel
