SUMMARY
The Assistant Superintendent of Academic Services is responsible for the development and implementation of all components of the district’s instructional program.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

- Oversees the development of curriculum in pre-kindergarten through grade 12.
- Researches available instructional programs and materials.
- Assures vertical alignment and scope/sequence between the various grade levels and administrative units of the school district are appropriately addressed.
- Plans for the scheduled review and revision of the school curriculum. Schedules and preside over meetings related to the development and revision of school curriculum. Some of these meetings may take place during the summer.
- Appoints such non-staff members to curricular committees as is appropriate; including students and patrons of the district.
- Makes recommendations to the Board regarding the purchase or use of instructional programs and materials.
- Provides leadership for positive instructional/educational change.
- Organizes staff development activities for the district.
- Serves as the administrative representative on the district’s Professional Development Committee.
- Conducts a yearly survey as to staff wants/needs in the areas of staff development.
- Oversee all federal programs.
- Attends grade level and subject area meetings of grades pK-12 as often as possible.
- Serves as a community resource for curricular and instructional issues.
- Works cooperatively with other directors to implement special instructional programs including programs for homeless children, gifted students, English language learners, migrant children and the Title I program.
- Leads the integration of technology in the instructional program with the help of the technology department.
- Sets up workshops by scheduling meeting places, providing workshop presenters as well as requesting snacks and materials for teachers in attendance.
- Monitors, with the assistance of the Director of Data, Assessment, and Accountability, district-wide student progress toward achievement of instructional objectives.
- Stays abreast of current developments in education field (instruction, curriculum, staff development, etc.)
- Oversees the PDC to implement the district’s professional development plan.
- Serves as Summer School Coordinator.
- Leads the district’s New Teacher Academy orientation program for teachers new to the district.
- Directs the district’s retention of academic records.
- Maintains confidential nature of all school-related matters.
- Performs other tasks and assumes other responsibilities as assigned by the Superintendent.

QUALIFICATIONS
Background Checks
Clearance on all background checks required by law that is satisfactory to the Administration.
Education/Experience
The Assistant Superintendent of Academic Services must hold a Master’s Degree in Education with multiple years’ experience in administration or related field and have an established record of successful experience as a teacher. Previous experience in the field of curriculum and instruction is preferred. He or she must have full knowledge of the Missouri Standards and Assessment Programs.
