TITLE

Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction

 

DESCRIPTION 

The assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction is a district leadership position reporting directly to the superintendent of schools.  The assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction will provide leadership and vision in ongoing planning, implementation, development, direction, review and evaluation of the district’s curriculum and instructional services.  The assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction ensures that the district’s and component schools’ educational objectives are aligned to state standards and to instructional practices that produce improved student achievement and instructional excellence.  The assistant superintendent plans, schedules, and presents training for administrators, teachers and other staff that is aligned with the district’s plans, goals, and objectives.

 

PURPOSE

To continuously improve instructional practices and student outcomes through data analysis, curriculum development process expertise, and the integration of faculty experience.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Valid NYS certification in school district leadership (SDL) or school district administrator (SDA) certification.
  2. A minimum of five (5) years of professional experience in school administration or comparable instructional leadership.

POSITION DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

Within the limits of authorized district policies, procedures, programs and budgets, the assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction is responsible for and has commensurate authority to accomplish the duties set below and all other responsibilities as assigned by the superintendent of schools:

  1. Coordinate and manage curricular and instructional activities that support the attainment of the district’s goals as delineated in its strategic plan and district- and school improvement plans.
  2. Ensure the development of programs and initiatives for the district’s elementary and secondary school operations in order to meet overall district goals.
  3. Conduct and commission regular data analyses that assess student learning and teacher effectiveness and report regularly to the superintendent and the board of education
  4. Provide advice, counsel, and support to the board of education, superintendent, administration, and other instructional staff.
  5. Assist in the development of district policies, regulations, and procedures as they relate to student learning.
  6. Coordinate and supervise professional development for instructional (i.e., certificated) staff.
  7. Provide leadership in school improvement planning and assist in district-wide planning to achieve district goals.
  8. Participate in weekly meetings of the superintendent’s cabinet.
  9. Coordinate reviews and the assessments of current curricula and instruction to ensure that programs are meeting intended objectives and other accountability measures.
  10. Coordinate and supervise the review and development of curriculum materials.
  11. Coordinate and direct special in-service education projects.
  12. Report regularly to the board of education on curricular and instructional programs.
  13. Supervise and evaluate administrators, teachers, and other staff, where appropriate.
  14. Coordinate and assist with the mentoring and orientation of new teachers and administrators.
  15. Make recommendations for the budget.
  16. Assist in the selection of new administrators and teachers for appointment
  17. Attend national, state, and local conferences on education, and make reports of these conferences to local personnel.
  18. Confer with commercial, educational, and other representatives who visit the school system.
  19. Work with administrators and teachers to coordinate curricular alignment in grades prekindergarten through 12.
  20. Consistent with board policies, monitor textbook and supplementary materials selections that are to be used in instructional programs.
  21. Observe teachers in their classrooms and offer insights for the enhancement of effective instruction.
  22. Studies, evaluates, and, where appropriate, recommends the adoption of new instructional materials, methods, course programs, and other initiatives to the superintendent.
  23. Coordinate and the district’s consolidated application, Title I (and other) programs, and other grant-funded programs.
  24. Serve as a liaison with the NYS Education Department in all matters pertaining to student learning.
  25. Maintain contact with social, professional, civic, volunteer, and other community agencies and groups having an interest in the schools.
  26. Coordinate and/or conduct investigations on complaints of bullying or harassment.
  27. Serve as the district’s Title VI, Title VII, and Title IX officer
  28. Conduct student 3214 hearings and supervise student discipline, including the development and monitoring of the student code of conduct.
  29. Coordinate and revise, when necessary, evaluation procedures for instructional staff.
  30. Foster professional growth and building of staff morale throughout the district.
  31. Represent the district at appropriate meetings and events.
  32. Cover for the superintendent as needed and/or requested.
  33. Any other duties or responsibilities that may be assigned by the superintendent.
