Classification

N4 Scale - 260 days per year, 8 hours per day

SUMMARY
The Finance Technician assists the finance department by performing administrative and technical support with a primary focus on payroll processing and related functions.  The role will support the monthly payroll administration process, as well as, provide effective record keeping and communication with all Augusta County School Board staff and employees.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Assist in managing the automated Timeclock software, including, missed punches, over-time tracking, monthly timesheet preparation, and related payroll functions.
  • Generate substitute and part-time employee reports for administrators and department heads monthly for approval.
  • Support the accurate and timely processing of payroll, including the collection of timesheets and employee changes.
  • Assist the Payroll and Benefits Manager in administering fringe benefit plans including, but not limited to, health, dental, and vision insurance, VRS retirement and life insurance, tax sheltered annuity plans, optional life insurance, FMLA, and workers compensation.
  • Respond to payroll and benefit inquiries professionally and confidentially.  Including assistance with the online Employee Access module to provide pay-stubs, tax change assistance, life events, etc.
  • Assist with maintaining employee records associated with payroll and benefit changes revolving around New Hire Onboarding, Employee Offboarding, and Open Enrollment.
  • Coordinate changes in demographic information between departments.
  • Provide documentation and administrative support related to unemployment claims and required follow-up.
  • Support the workers’ compensation process by coordinating with schools and departments to obtain supporting documentation, submit information to insurance providers, and maintain follow-up records related to incidents, medical documentation, and applicable payments. 
  • Ensure compliance with Personnel Policies, internal controls, and applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the operations of the Finance Department.


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.

  • Effective at managing multiple projects simultaneously while working under pressure and meeting deadlines. 
  • Knowledge of basic accounting functions and payroll-related calculations, including percentages, time and fractions of time calculations, and basic algebraic functions.
  • Technical proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Excel and Word, Google Workspace applications, and the ability to learn various software packages pertinent to the operations of the school division.
  • Ability to read, write, and interpret procedure manuals.  
  • Ability to prepare routine reports and correspondence accurately and professionally.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out written, oral, or diagram based instructions.  

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Possess a High School Diploma or general education degree (GED); Associate’s Degree preferred; one to three years related payroll, finance, accounting, human resources, or administrative support experience is preferred; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

EVALUATION Performance on this job will be evaluated in accordance with school board policy and administrative regulations on evaluation of personnel.
