Position Summary:
The CMU Health and Physical Education (HPE) program in the Department of Physical Education and Sport (PES) is recruiting for a tenure-track faculty appointment at the level of assistant/associate professor effective August 2026. Tenure-track faculty generally teach nine (9) credit hours per semester while also engaging in service to the department, college, university. Faculty are also required to engage in scholarly activity that results in successful publications in their field of expertise.
This position will primarily teach K-12 physical education courses with an emphasis in elementary methods. Additional responsibilities may be assigned by areas of expertise or department needs (e.g., adapted physical education, assessment, and athletic coaching).

Dow College of Health Professions consists of five academic units (Department of Physical Therapy, Department of Physical Education and Sport, Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, the School of Health Sciences, and the School of Rehabilitation and Medical Science). The college offers undergraduate and/or graduate degree programs in athletic training, audiology, communication sciences and disorders, exercise science, environmental health and safety, health administration, physical activity specialist, physical education, physical therapy, physician assistant, public health, school and public health education, speech-language pathology, and sport management, delivered by 100 faculty/staff. Students within the program are heavily recruited and hired upon graduation. The program is intentional about preparing pre-service teachers to equip K-12 students with the skills to stay active, fit, and healthy throughout life. - Terminal degree in K-12 Physical Education or related field.
- Evidence of an active research agenda related to K-12 physical education.
- Demonstrated leadership and collaborative skills.
- Effective oral/written communication skills.
- Proficiency in use of technology.
- Ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Ph.D. in K-12 physical education with an emphasis in elementary methods.
- Three (3) years of successful experience teaching elementary physical education in a K-12 school setting.
- Experience teaching at the university level.
- Evidence of involvement with professional associations and/or organizations associated with school physical education policy and promotion.
- Three (3) years of successful experience in athletic coaching.
