We welcome you to join our team as a Registered Dietitian (0.4 FTE, 16 hours per week) position in the Osceola County Branch office of the Central Michigan District Health Department, improving the health outcomes of women and children in the community. This position is an integral part of our public health team serving both the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Program, providing nutrition education, support, and direction to families. Having excellent communication skills to accommodate our client’s health related needs and concerns, while being detail oriented and possessing exceptional technical and counseling skills are necessary. Opportunity for utilization of new technologies in telehealth may be available.
A Bachelor of Science Degree in nutrition and with current registration as a Registered Dietitian required. One year experience in community health nutrition or outpatient counseling recommended. Will consider new graduates who pass the Registration Exam within 6 months of hire.

Salary Range: Bachelor's degree Registered Dietitian $29.34 - $36.69 / hour, Master's degree Registered Dietitian $31.55 - $39.44 / hour.
General Summary: Under general direction, promotes individual and population health through advanced, comprehensive nutrition education, counseling and community-based initiatives. Provides advanced dietary and nutrition knowledge, counseling and recommendations for clients and families participating in Maternal Child Health programs in the clinic. Develops diet and nutrition plan of care based on a comprehensive assessment and client needs and interests. Serves as professional resource and nutrition expert participating in community-based programs, grants and coalitions.
Essential Duties:
- Completes comprehensive health, growth and nutrition assessment of clients.
- Provides client-centered counseling and referrals, engaging clients in setting goals and behavioral changes necessary to achieve optimal health status.
- Promotes, protects and supports breastfeeding initiation and duration among clients and the community. Displays a positive attitude related to breastfeeding to clients and the general public.
- Makes appropriate nutritional and breastfeeding recommendations to healthcare providers and maternal child health staff.
- Works as team member in sharing information and knowledge, and coordinating client services and referrals to ensure effective health outcomes.
- Documents accurate and detailed diet and nutrition care plan in electronic health record including billable visits. Ensures accuracy, integrity and confidentiality of record information and documents.
- Provides breastfeeding support, education, intervention and referrals.
- Evaluates, approves and documents special formulas for qualifying medical conditions.
Serves as nutrition expert and liaison for maternal and child health and other agency programs.
Other Duties & Responsibilities:
- Participates in training and mentoring new staff and student interns.
- Certified Lactation Educators or specialists: provide advanced breastfeeding interventions and recommendations.
- Represents agency and public health at community coalitions.
- Conducts outreach to community partners including health care providers.
- Maintains up-to-date vaccines including flu (influenza,) in accordance with CDC guidelines: Recommended Vaccines for Healthcare Workers, in which you allow CMDHD to access your current immunization status based on Michigan Improvement Care Registry (MCIR).
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in dietetics, foods and nutrition
- Registered with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND); RDN-Eligible candidates will be considered.
- Experience in clinical and/or community health and nutrition preferred.
- Ability to navigate and use electronic databases, enter and retrieve information in electronic health record; and proficiency in Office 365 applications.
- Self-motivated and ability to work independently, and plan and prioritize with minimal supervision.
- Critical thinking and decision-making skills in client care and policy implementation; and ability to apply client-centered-services (CCS) skills to engage clients in health behavior changes and outcomes.
- Advanced communication skills and abilities to work effectively with all levels of staff, clients and community partners; and engage clients from diverse socio-economic, cultural and educational backgrounds.
- Reliable transportation with valid Michigan driver’s license and certificate of insurance to travel to other locations for work, training, or meetings.
- Completion of National Incident Management System/Incident Command System online and face-to-face training courses based on current Public Health Emergency Preparedness requirements.

Environment & Effort:
- General office setting in health department facility as well as community.
- Exposure Control – Category A. At higher risk for occupational percutaneous or mucosal exposure to blood or body fluids. Per OSHA’s Bloodborne Pathogens standard requirements, CMDHD protects the employee by an established exposure control plan which includes but is not limited to use of universal precautions, engineering controls, work practice controls, personal protective equipment, and worker training.
- Some exposure to adverse weather conditions and hazards when driving to off-site locations for client visits, community meetings or trainings.
- May be exposed to clients or individuals who exhibit challenging behaviors.
- Performance of essential duties requires talking, hearing and repetitive motions (typing, data entry etc.)
- Visual effort in viewing computer display and reading forms and charts.
- Work is primarily sedentary with occasional physical effort requiring lifting 20 pounds to carry or move supplies or equipment.
