Location: Central High School
General Summary:
The SSN Specialist serves students who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate overnight residence by providing support services to ensure educational success. The Specialist works closely with students, parents, school staff, and community agencies to overcome obstacles that are creating barriers to learning.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Enhance academic performance by assessing student needs.
- Help students with organizational skills and educational planning.
- Arrange extra tutoring sessions and help from teachers or another source, as needed.
- Monitor student progress and attendance in scheduled classes.
- Consult with teachers to determine strategies for academic assistance.
- Complete records on each student (needs assessment, services provided, tutoring).
- Complete and submit data forms as required.
- Serves as a point of contact between the student and appropriate stakeholders.
- Advocate for accommodations, class schedules, and/or individual assessment when appropriate.
- Remove barriers to students’ full access to opportunities in school environment, including co-curricular and extracurricular activities.
- Provide access to all basic needs.
- Provide referrals for applicable service agencies.
- Provide information and assistance regarding post-secondary education to TCAPS students and to LEA’s of the Northwest Michigan Student Support Network McKinney-Vento Grant Consortium..
- Promote life/social skills with peers and adults.
- Listen, support, and model effective communication and problem solving skills.
- Empower students to self-advocate.
- Attend meetings and training sessions, as assigned.
- Participate in professional development related to poverty and/or homelessness.
- Be accessible for collegial consultation to TCAPS students and to LEA’s of the Northwest Michigan Student Support Network McKinney-Vento Grant Consortium
- Maintain licensure through the Michigan Department of Education (if applicable).
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- College degree and/or previous relevant work experience preferred.
- Interpersonal skills necessary to deal effectively and courteously with students, staff, and members of the community.
- Analytical abilities necessary to perform duties.
- Ability to work with detail and maintain accurate records.
- Ability to work with confidential information.
- Secretarial/clerical skills necessary to perform office duties.
- Dependable, reliable, and protective of sensitive/confidential information.
Physical and Mental Requirements:
- Must be able to report on a regular and consistent basis.
- Maintain consistent and punctual attendance.
- Duties include frequent walking and physical activity, as well as use of hands and arms for signaling and light lifting/carrying. Must have the ability to move about the classroom/building and school property, including bending, pushing/pulling, lifting, twisting, climbing, stooping, or crouching to complete work-related tasks with and without students.
- The ability to listen and effectively orally communicate information and ideas to a diverse population.

Environmental Conditions:
Incumbents work in indoor environments with moderate to loud noise levels. Duties may be completed in cold and hot temperatures, including work on slippery and/or uneven surfaces. Work environment includes working around students, school equipment, and office equipment.
Work Schedules:
Must be available to report during the school year consistent with the district’s school year calendar and reporting work schedule. Overtime and/or emergency overtime before and/or after a regular scheduled workday, when necessary.
