TITLE: ELEMENTARY GUIDANCE COUNSELOR

QUALIFICATIONS: As set by state certification authorities and North Central Association; Counselor certification preferred.

REPORTS TO: Principal at both Skyview and Surrey Hills Elementaries

JOB GOAL:  To assist students in the elementary schools with educational planning and Personal-social development.  In reaching the desired goals of individual counseling and group work, the person assigned to this position would work cooperatively with students, staff, parents, and community.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Assumes a leadership role in planning, developing, and initiating a sound developmental guidance program for the school in cooperation with the principal.
2. Works with all concerned persons in assisting them in understanding and appreciating the individuality of each student.
3. Maintains a daily log of activities.
4. Plans and leads small group activities designed to lead students to increased self-understanding and self-worth, as well as an understanding of others and an appreciation of their worth and uniqueness.
5. Plans and leads classroom guidance units designed to lead students to an increased awareness of self and others in the areas of feeling, values, careers, and communication.
6. Works to identify and help in proper placement of exceptional students.
7. Works with students on an individual basis in the solution of personal problems.
8. Interprets the guidance program to the community and provides community agencies with information on the needs of youth.
9. Works with teachers and other staff members to familiarize them with the general range of services offered by the guidance department, and to improve the educational prospects of individual students being counseled.
10. Counsels with parents toward meeting specific needs of their children and work with them to develop a plan of action.
11. Confers with teachers, as a co-worker, in developing a plan of action in an effort to better meet the needs of  a student who is having educational, social, emotional, or disciplinary difficulty.
12. Observes and studies pupil behavior in the classroom and other situations as requested in order to identify needs for special guidance services.
13. Assists in identifying and facilitating referral of children with serious problems to other school or community services.
14. Attends and participates in faculty meetings.
15. Provides for his own professional growth through an ongoing program of reading, workshops, seminars, conferences, and/or advanced course work at institutions of higher learning.
16. Completes reports and other job related paperwork as required, at or before the time requested.
17. Accepts the responsibility and arrives punctually for activities and duties as assigned.
18. Establishes and maintains cooperative relations with co-workers.
19. Assists the administration in implementing all policies and/or rules governing student life and conduct.
20. Maintains appropriate emotional stability, physical health, personal appearance, and personality.

• Yearly stipend $1,725.00
