This position supports the mission and work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization. The Specialty Fitness Instructor delivers advanced or niche fitness formats that require specialized certification or expertise. The role leads high-quality specialty instruction (e.g., advanced cycle, barre, yoga modalities, Pilates, HIIT specialty, TRX, etc.), tailoring coaching to diverse abilities while maintaining safety, strong technique standards, and an inclusive environment. The Specialty Fitness Instructor also supports the Health & Wellness program mix by piloting or expanding specialty offerings in alignment with YMCA guidelines and Association expectations.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Models the YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility in all interactions with members, guests, and staff.
- Leads advanced/specialty fitness classes and experiences in accordance with specialized certification standards, YMCA guidelines, and Association expectations.
- Designs specialty class plans/series (where applicable) that reflect safe progressions, advanced cueing, and appropriate intensity management for varied participant needs and abilities.
- Provides high-touch coaching: teaches precise technique, offers layered modifications/progressions, and proactively addresses risk factors (injury history, contraindications, fatigue, etc.).
- Creates an inclusive, welcoming environment and builds community within specialty formats, supporting member engagement and retention through consistent, high-quality experiences.
- Supports program quality by collaborating with Health & Wellness leadership on specialty scheduling, participant feedback, and continuous improvement of offerings.
- Maintains required administrative tasks (attendance, equipment checks as applicable, incident documentation, and other reports) and communicates promptly about safety or facility concerns.
- Maintains current specialty credentials and continuing education; stays current on trends and evidence-based practices relevant to specialty formats taught.
- Serves as an ambassador for YMCA programs and services, connecting participants to additional wellness opportunities and resources aligned with their goals.
- Follows YMCA policies, emergency procedures, and mandated reporting/abuse-prevention protocols; responds appropriately to accidents/incidents and safety concerns.
